Katie Zacharia’s first days as White House Press Secretary have sparked fierce media criticism, but her remarkable testimony of surviving an abortion attempt tells a deeper story.
Trump’s new Press Secretary has left the administration’s political opponents scrambling for dirt.
Katie Zacharia speaks Chinese, is an abortion survivor, mum of four, and a highly credentialed commentator.
Her CV includes a law degree, two years working as an associate for Zhong Lun Law Firm in Beijing, and time spent working as a media advisor.
This includes serving on the board of advisors with Seth Gruber’s pro-life White Rose Resistance advocacy group.
It’s no surprise then that legacy media gave the new press secretary zero grace on her first day.
The hits came hard and fast. Most focused on her performance and flowed from the media’s decade-long “hate Trump, because love trumps hate” dissonance.
USA Todayrepeatedly referred to her as anti-abortion and stated that her White House tenure has gotten off to a rocky start.
The news outlet then shared Zacharia’s story of adoption as context for her position on abortion, only to then accuse the press secretary of spreading misinformation.
She once linked the abortion-on-demand pill, mifepristone, to the chemical used to gas Jews and Christians in Nazi concentration camps.
Tying in “distorted facts” criticisms from the Auschwitz Memorial with pro-abortion group “Reproductive Freedom for All”, USA Today appeared to paint Zacharia as a conspiracy theorist.
The Mirror called her performance cringeworthy. 9 News, CNN-News18 and The Guardian described it as awkward. Oneindia News claimed that she was caught off guard. The Independent and others labelled it a train wreck.
Some YouTube channels were just as scathing. One YouTube channel accused her of bumbling, and Stephanie Miller attempted to argue that Trump was already fed up with Zacharia.
This is despite Trump telling the New York Post that he thought she was very good.
Zacharia was also accused of abruptly cutting the conference short, even though she told reporters the reason was Trump’s historic trip to Alaska.
McEnany and Kelly Urge Critics to Give Her Time
Applauding Zacharia, Trump 1.0 press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Zacharia brought some big news to the podium for her first day.
McEnany then drew attention to timing, saying Zacharia “began her job yesterday. She did this briefing today, about 24 hours into the job.”
“It was two weeks before my start date and first press briefing. So, kudos to her for coming out and just saying, I’m going to do a briefing, and I’m going to do it within 24 hours.”
McEnany wasn’t alone in offering Zacharia room to ease into the job.
Megyn Kelly remarked, “I think she deserves a chance. She’s got to get used to the big seat; of course she was nervous. Anyone would be.”
She then said that no one could ever be worse than Joe Biden’s second press secretary, openly LGBTQ+ Karine Jean-Pierre.
Kelly added, “Yet we were told she’s amazing and if we don’t think that, we’re racist, sexist, and bigoted against gay people.”
Questions Over Fix California Add to the Scrutiny
Now, on day two, Kelly said Zacharia is facing a colonoscopy-level of scrutiny that no Democrat press secretary has ever received.
Her comments weren’t just about the media piling on to humiliate Zacharia over her first press briefing.
Kelly was pointing to Zacharia’s unclear position as general counsel for Fix California.
Confusion about her role with the organisation, founded by Ric Grenell, is supplying Trump critics with a way to reinvent Zacharia’s integrity. It’s also an unwelcome distraction for Republicans who are campaigning for the mid-term elections.
Although Zacharia has political science and law degrees from Pepperdine University in California, she needs to pass the bar to practice as a lawyer.
Questions are being asked about whether or not the press secretary broke California law.
The Phone Call That Saved Her Life
While the largely leftist legacy media frantically chases its tail, all excited, thinking they’ve landed a gotcha Trump moment, the bigger story here is Zacharia’s testimony.
Her mum was pressured to terminate Zacharia and chose adoption instead.
Zacharia unpacked this for Gates Garcia in an interview 12 months ago.
There, she said, “I was approximately 20-30 minutes away from being aborted. I learned this when I met my biological mum when I was 18.
“I was then adopted out as a newborn, and the story is one of a miracle.”
Zacharia explained that her biological mum “had an abortion appointment at 10 am and her aunt had pulled up ready to take her to get an abortion.
“She’s a 19-year-old single young woman who had kind of been a groupie for Mötley Crüe, grew up with a pretty tough background of sexual abuse, and is pregnant now with this baby and doesn’t know what to do.”
The first phone call Zacharia said that her mum received was from her biological father, who wanted the abortion and wanted to do whatever it took to make that happen.
The next call, she said, was from a Christian counsellor who carefully encouraged adoption over abortion.
Zacharia told Garcia, her mum “goes out to her aunt and says I’m not getting an abortion.”
“To the anger and dismay of her family, she goes forward with the pregnancy.”
“That phone call really saved my life.”
When posting about the appointment as Trump’s choice for one of the toughest jobs on the planet, Zacharia wrote on X, “Thank you to President Trump for the distinguished privilege of serving as White House Press Secretary.
“Serving President Trump and the American people at this critical 250-year mark is the honour of a lifetime.”
“I look forward to working with the White House press corps, and with reporters across the country, to get that record out. Following the fabulous Karoline Leavitt is a high standard, and one worth meeting. God bless President Trump, and God bless America.”
