Day 29: Drop Your Weapon!
Intention
To cease frantic, self-reliant striving and rest in the assurance that the battle belongs to God.
Scripture
“Come, see the works of the Lord,
who brings devastation on the earth.
He makes wars cease throughout the earth.
He shatters bows and cuts spears to pieces;
he sets carts ablaze.
“‘Stop fighting, and know that I am God,
exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth.’
The Lord of Armies is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.”
– Psalm 46:8–11
Reflection
If you’ve been a Christian for a while, you’ve probably read Psalm 46 before. It’s even more likely that you’ve sung from verse 10, which is typically translated from the Hebrew as, “Be still and know that I am God.”
What, then, do we make of the Christian Standard Bible’s translation of the Hebrew word raphah as “stop fighting” rather than the more common “be still”?
By translating the word as “stop fighting”, we’re forced to surrender our mental image of having peaceful, meditative quiet time for something altogether different. And a proper understanding of Psalm 46 would suggest we must.
If you’re like me you’ve seen your fair share of TV cop dramas and that classic stand-off scene where the police have a villain cornered. They’re crouched behind their cars and yelling, “Drop your weapon!” They’re not asking; they’re commanding. The bad guy has his very life in his hands and he’d better make a wise decision.
This is much closer to what the psalmist is getting at. Modern scholars often place this psalm during the 8th-century BC Assyrian crisis, when King Sennacherib’s terrifying imperial army swept through Judah, conquering cities and isolating Jerusalem under a brutal siege.
Perhaps recent images of Paris burning or Ukraine under constant bombardment can help us to imagine the kind of chaotic circumstances the psalmist was describing. This “chaos” was not an abstract emotional state; it was the literal threat of starvation, conquering armies, and systemic destruction.
In verse 9, God is described as the one who breaks bows, shatters spears, and burns chariots. Thus, when God commands raphah (“Be still”) in verse 10, he is commanding the frantic, warmongering empires to “desist!” He is essentially telling the invading armies to drop their weapons because their war is futile against the Creator.
In this month of praying for the Church to awaken, Psalm 46 — and especially this command to desist in verse 10 — has two powerful reminders for us.
Firstly, the enemies of God and of his bride are fighting a losing battle. (Spoiler, we win!) The psalm warns the violent empires — earthly and heavenly — that they will not win against Yahweh Sabaoth (the Lord of Hosts/Armies) and his sovereign plan. They must “drop their weapons”, make a wise decision, or face terrifying judgement.
Secondly, for God’s people, it is a powerful antidote to panic, fear and defeatism. In the writer’s day, when a city was surrounded, the human instinct was to build bigger defences, forge weapons, or make desperate political alliances. Psalm 46:10 taught them — and teaches us — to cease frantic, self-reliant striving. The battle belongs to God, not military might.
By choosing raphah, the psalmist is expressing the safety of ultimate surrender. True peace does not come from waiting for the storm to clear up, but from knowing who controls the storm.
Psalm 46:10 is a radical statement of trust. It means declaring that God is our refuge even when the physical world is collapsing, and that our frantic human efforts to control our lives are often what keep us from experiencing his deliverance.
Take a moment right now in prayerful reflection. Are you in a battle, trying to fight in your own strength? What is the Lord asking you to do, to express your trust in his sovereign rule and to ‘drop your weapon’?

Prayer
Abba Father, you are in control. Thank you that I can completely trust you, even in the most chaotic, frantic and fearful of circumstances. I confess, Lord, my fleshly human instinct to grab the nearest weapon and fight the battle myself. I’ve done that before and it doesn’t work. I remind myself again today that the battle is yours. Thank you for your peace, which is beyond understanding. I receive it from you, now, by faith, with joy. Amen.

Prayer Points for October 2026
We are praying for the Church to:
- Awaken to her first love for Jesus (Ephesians 5:14; Revelation 2:4).
- Awaken to evangelism so that millions will trust in Christ (John 3:16; Proverbs 11:30).
- Awaken to her prophetic voice to the nation (Isaiah 52:1; Matthew 14:4).
We invite you to support this campaign to multiply prayer in Australia for revival and see millions come to faith in Christ. Every donation to the Canberra Declaration helps us promote prayer and make a stand for family, faith, freedom, life, and the good news of God’s love through Jesus Christ.
