Day 4: Praying for Government
Intention
We must pray for government, because we get the government we pray for.
Scripture
“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
1 Timothy 2:1-4
Reflection
Praying for all in authority, including the government, is a direct instruction in Scripture. It’s something that we as believers should be doing regularly. A dear elderly lady who attended my church for many years once looked at me very intensely in the eyes and said, “We get the government we pray for.” I knew it was the truth and it was kind of a life-changing moment for me. If Christians really raise a standard in prayer and supplication to the Lord for a righteous government, we will see that manifest — hopefully sooner rather than later.
This Scripture also tells us the reason God wants us to pray for all in authority, because He wants us and His church to be able to live a quiet and peaceable life so that people can be saved by coming to a knowledge of Jesus. So does this mean when we have good and godly people in authority, it’s the best environment for people to get saved? Yes, that’s exactly what it means! So many Christians pray for revival (and for people to be saved) including myself, but much fewer pray this Scripture regularly. But we should be praying it: it is a key to establishing a righteous Australia and nations of this world.
Prayer
Lord, I pray for all in authority as Your Word says, that we, Your church, may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness.
Thank You, Lord, that it is Your will that none should perish and come to a knowledge of You, so I pray that everyone in authority comes to a knowledge of You, along with their families too. We pray the same for everyone in Australia, that this nation would truly become the Great Southland of the Holy Spirit.
Lord, Your Word says that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34). We ask for a righteous government in Queensland, the USA, NZ and the ACT and all the other states around Australia and nations of the world. Please protect church leaders and governmental leaders around the world, including US President Trump, who uphold human life, Your Word and Your ways.
Lord, thank You that Your Word says that exaltation comes from You (Psalm 75:6), and that You give grace to the humble but You oppose the proud (1 Peter 5:5). I ask You oppose and remove from government and authority those who are enemies of Life and Your ways. Send confusion to the enemy camp (Exodus 23:27). I ask for promotion for those who love You and Your ways. I ask for a righteous government.
I ask for Your favour and protection over those who stand for life (against both abortion and euthanasia), and that they will legislate accordingly to Your ways.
Lord, please give us the government that is fitting for the King of kings, Your beautiful son Jesus.
In Jesus’ holy name we pray. Amen.
