The Rise of “Toxic Femininity”

2.1 MINS

The days of women merely fighting for equal opportunity have long since ceased. According to Christina Hoff Summers, the goal of at least some leading feminists now is to destroy all men.

Summers based this assertion on an article by Suzanna Danuta Walters from The Washington Post, “Why can’t we hate men?” As Walters wrote:

So men, if you really are #WithUs and would like us to not hate you for all the millennia of woe you have produced and benefited from, start with this: Lean out so we can actually just stand up without being beaten down. Pledge to vote for feminist women only. Don’t run for office. Don’t be in charge of anything. Step away from the power. We got this. And please know that your crocodile tears won’t be wiped away by us anymore. We have every right to hate you. You have done us wrong. #BecausePatriarchy. It is long past time to play hard for Team Feminism. And win.

Unsurprisingly, Walters is a professor of sociology and director of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Northeastern University, as well as the editor of the gender studies journal Signs.

As though that were not enough, Summers then goes on to refer to another Washington Post article, by Victoria Bissell Brown, another college professor. Brown picks up where Walters left off and writes:

I yelled at my husband last night. Not pick-up-your-socks yell. Not how-could-you-ignore-that-red-light yell. This was real yelling. This was 30 minutes of from-the-gut yelling. Triggered by a small, thoughtless, dismissive, annoyed, patronizing comment. Really small. A micro-wave that triggered a hurricane. I blew. Hard and fast. And it terrified me. I’m still terrified by what I felt and what I said. I am almost 70 years old. I am a grandmother. Yet in that roiling moment, screaming at my husband as if he represented every clueless male on the planet (and I every angry woman of 2018), I announced that I hate all men and wish all men were dead…

My husband of 50 years did not have to stifle a laugh. He took it dead seriously. He did not defend his remark, he did not defend men. He sat, hunched and hurt, and he listened.

In another other context, this would clearly classify as being an example of domestic violence. But modern feminists have become so emboldened through their own lens of victimhood, that they now believe that this is their right.

But this is the sad — but inevitable — result whenever you make your own gender the controlling paradigm and ultimate authority for everyone else’s worldview. They must all bow down and worship the image which you have created, lest they be classified as heretics and shunned. And as such, it’s not just toxic masculinity which must be resisted, but its female equivalent as well.

What a profound difference the Christian Gospel makes though, because it’s not gender that’s our ultimate problem — even if it is expressed in gendered ways, see Genesis 3:16-19 — but sin. And as such, the solution is not the suppression of one gender over the other, but the cross. For Christ’s death, resurrection and ascension frees us from the bondage which we ourselves have created.
