The Bible’s authors weren’t writing fiction — they were recording what they saw, heard, and touched: real events that shaped history.

It’s all too common today to hear people dismiss the Bible as a work of fiction. Many assume its authors were simply recording personal impressions or spiritual reflections with little concern for historical accuracy.

But a closer look reveals something very different. The writers of Scripture were convinced they were documenting real events. They saw their task not as spinning religious tales, but as recording history — things they had seen, heard, and touched.

This doesn’t, by itself, prove the Bible’s spiritual claims. But it does challenge us to take those claims seriously. These authors were staking everything on the truth of what actually happened.

In other words: the Bible isn’t true because its authors said so. It’s that they were willing to bet everything — even their lives — on what they saw with their own eyes.

The Bible’s Claim: History, Not Hearsay

Consider just a handful of statements drawn from Scripture:

“Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus.”
— Luke 1:1-3

“Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.’”
— Luke 7:22

“Then He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.’”

A Faith That Invites Investigation

This is why Christianity is so historically anchored. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection happened — or they didn’t. And the writers are clear: if these things didn’t happen, then the whole faith collapses (see 1 Corinthians 15:14).

Christianity doesn’t retreat into private spirituality. It opens itself to public, historical scrutiny.

The Bible never asks us to trust it blindly. It simply says: Look. Look at the evidence. Look at the testimony. Look at the people who lived and died proclaiming what they saw.

As you can see from the passages above, the writers of Scripture consistently appealed to historical facts and eyewitness experience. Their faith wasn’t built on fleeting emotion but on the firm ground of reality.
