Day 9: Your Family’s Legacy
Intention
Despite the continued attack on the family both inside and outside the four walls of the church, our goal should be to have God honouring marriages and families for generations to come.
Scripture
“We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” Psalm 78.4
“One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” Psalm 145.4
“A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children.” Proverbs 13:22
Reflection
When couples stand before God, family and friends to commit themselves to one another for “better or worse, richer and poorer, sickness and in health, till death to them part”, they really believe it.
But, unfortunately, ‘life” gets in the way, people drift and, far too often, the dream of a lifetime together is not a reality.
Relationship breakdown is a painful, heartbreaking reality. Not only is it expensive relationally, emotionally, financially, and spiritually, regrettably children are collateral damage.
Preparing your children for successful lifetime relationships starts at home. To role model marriage and family as God intended, we need to draw closer and fall more in love with God (vertical relationship). This helps us grow and love those around us (horizontal relationship).
As we follow God’s guidelines of mutual submission, love, respect, dying to self, serving, prioritising His church and loving Him, our families and our relationships will be strengthened in our everyday lives.
One of the greatest evangelical tools at our disposal is healthy families and relationships.
As people observe our life, it earns the right to speak into their lives to share our hope in Jesus and introduce them to the creator of the universe.
“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15
Prayer
Lord help us to be the men and women you have called us to be in our relationships, homes, work, church and everyday life. Allow us to shine your light to a world that is so dark. For those who are struggling, help them find a supportive community to pray, encourage and support them. We ask that they seek your wisdom and reveal your peace in their storm.
For those that are doing well, let us continue to run the race set before us so that the generations to follow will see your faithfulness and goodness.
Please help us to be God honouring role models in our families and relationships and be ready to share that you are the reason for that hope. And Father, help the church be a place that teaches and equips us all about how to be God honouring husbands, wives and parents.
In this we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen
