Day 31: Looking for Heroes

31 October 2021

2.7 MINS

Intention

The Bible’s stories of the heroes of the faith are recorded to encourage us. They are the role models for us as parents.

Scripture

“All of these, though they won divine approval by their faith, did not receive the fulfilment of what was promised, because God had us in mind and had something better and greater in view for us, so that they [these heroes and heroines of faith] should not come to perfection before we could join them.” Heb 11:39–40 (AMP)

Reflection

Superheroes may be great fictional characters, but they do have flaws. For instance, exposure to green kryptonite greatly weakens Superman, robbing him of his powers. Prolonged exposure is fatal.

Every parent wants to be a hero in the eyes of their children; however, just as Superman had his “kryptonite,” so do we.

“This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Heb 4:15–16 (NLT)

Paul wasn’t perfect and neither are we. He said to the Corinthians who were his children in the faith: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”

Notice that Paul did not say, “Do everything I do.” Instead, he said, “Do everything I do which is Christlike.” 1 Cor 11:1 (TNIV)

Timothy Dalton said, “You can’t relate to a superhero, to a superman, but you can identify with a real man who in times of crisis draws forth some extraordinary quality from within himself and triumphs but only after a struggle.”

God calls us to fight, and, in these times, we are fighting for our families, our marriages, the future generation. We are encouraged to “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called…” 1 Tim 6:12 (TNIV)

Being connected to our heavenly Father in prayer is our strength: “This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven…” Mt 6:9 (TNIV)

“Father” in Aramaic is “Abba” which means Daddy. Addressing God as Abba (Dearest Father) is not only an indication of spiritual health, but it marks the authenticity of our faith.

“Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” (Gal 4:6 TNIV)

The impulse to call on God in this way is a sign of being God’s child.

Prayer

Abba, Dear Father. Help us to know that we can keep fighting the good fight because You sustain us.

You have given us Jesus, the Christ, Who can relate to our weaknesses and is here to strengthen us. Help us to draw on Your power to fight the fight for our families, our marriages and our nation.

Thank you for Who You are our Dearest Father, for Your Holy Spirit Who empowers us each day, and for Your Son, our Great High Priest, Who “is always living to make petition to God and intercede with Him and intervene for” His people (Heb 7:25 AMP).

Amen.
