Day 15: Awakening to God’s Purpose for Sexual Intimacy

15 October 2024

2.8 MINS

Intention

To awaken ourselves to the beauty of God’s design for sexual intimacy between a husband and wife.

Scripture

“It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

– Genesis 2:18

Reflection

In my first year as CEO of the Australian Christian Lobby, I soon realised the need for helpers. The work of challenging our nation’s laws is a big feat. Not one person, nor even one organisation, could possibly accomplish it alone. It is only possible with ‘help’.

Every day, I ask God for help. I know that as I lift my eyes above the circumstances and to the mountains, He will help (Psalm 121:1–2).

Help is in the nature and character of God. It is part of His goodwill towards mankind and extended through His design of the marriage partnership as a partnership of ‘help’.

The mutual bond of trust between two people in marriage who help one another – not only in tasks, but through emotional support, encouragement and prayer – is a sacred place for the sharing of sexual intimacy.

In Genesis 2:21–22, God took a rib of a man and placed it inside a woman – man in woman. Why? It was so the physical act of sex – man in woman – would represent God’s intent at creation. The intent that she and he become one flesh (Genesis 2:24). The female body was thus perfectly created for the male body (Genesis 2:23). A blessed, God-ordained union.

The misuse of human sexuality denies God’s intent for humanity. It takes what is pure and life-giving and defiles it, making it cheap and destructive. What is meant for a union of mutual help and support is exchanged for shallow personal gratification – often at the expense of the other person.

But what a beautiful message we have. True and sacrificial love, where two people who help one another and connect deeply, celebrate their union, uniting in trust and appreciation in deeply satisfying sexual intimacy.

May our world wake up to God’s purpose for sexual intimacy. May eyes be opened to the unfulfilling nature of sex without commitment, and the beauty of God’s design for sexual intimacy between the husband-and-wife relationship of ‘help’.

May we see the goodness of God’s plan repopularised in our culture – and the label of ‘repressive’ be replaced with labels such as ‘fulfilling’, ‘wholesome’, ‘wise’ and ‘beautiful’.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for creating the marriage relationship in the Garden of Eden. When You saw Adam alone, thank You, that out of Your good nature towards humanity, You made a helper for him.

I ask that You open the eyes of the blind; to see the good plan You have for them and that to walk in sexual integrity is fulfilling and life-giving.

Have mercy on our nation, which has embraced sexual immorality – even in our laws. May Your Holy Spirit cause hearts to turn to You, to be cleansed and washed by the blood of Jesus.

In Your holy name,

Amen.

In pre-Vatican 2 we Catholics were taught that sexual Marriage between a man and a woman was one of the 7 Sacraments together with Baptism , Holy Communion, etc. It was something beautiful, sacred, instituted by God for the benefit of both men and women and the raising of children in a stable , loving environment. Since Vatican 2 (about 50 years ago ) I have heard trite , boring sermons which have just about sent me to sleep , not a single one extolling Marriage (Sex ) between a man and a woman. The committment of Marriage is the basis for a stable, crime-free society. Time for priests , pastors to stop being lazy cowards and preach the Gospel regardless of the threat of punishment by the State. Time for combined Civil Disobedience by preaching God’s Sacred Word. Silence destroys a Free society and our religion.
