Day 19: God’s Astonishing Grace

19 October 2024

3 MINS

Intention

To rest in God’s astonishing grace that enables us to walk in a perverse and crooked generation.

Scripture

“You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.”

– John 15:3

Reflection

After a month of prayer and fasting for sexual integrity, a breakthrough is hugely significant. We should understand and expect that the enemy will deliberately attempt to distract, hinder, trip and discourage us.

Last week, after inadvertently upsetting a daughter with a thoughtless comment, she was noticeably upset and said so in no uncertain terms. I was quick to apologise for my thoughtlessness. I went for a walk to prevent escalation, repent, and chat with the Lord.

There is a lake close to us with a fountain. It’s lovely and quiet. I wandered toward the bridge over the water, contemplating the situation.

I have learned to suspect that there is a gem of wisdom in every difficult circumstance that will be whispered, if I ask. As I began to ask, why has this situation not changed? Why do I live as the only Christian with family all around that are prayed for, and nothing seems to change? Lord, how should I think about this?

I had not even verbalised this thought before the Holy Spirit highlighted the filthy water in the pond. It was really green. Then He highlighted a lovely black and white duck, all by itself, on the pond and coming toward me as I crossed the bridge. The Holy Spirit whispered, “It’s because of the water they swim in.”

As I contemplated this, I noticed the duck was also clean. I thought about this and waited.

How does it stay clean in such water? I pondered. It even ate the bugs and mosquito larvae on top of the dirty water. As the parable of the duck and my situation clarified in my mind, the Spirit again said, “You are already clean” (John 15:3).

Again, my eyes leaked at the grace of God. He knows, He understands. He walks with me through every difficult place. God is always eager to help me grow.

The Lord’s clear words halted the enemy’s attempts to distract me with complaint or self-pity. These four words brought peace, calm and clarity. His grace is amazing, His call to come, every moment, every situation. God loves us so much and pursues and watches over us!

Finding the family of faith for prayer and keeping short accounts is the way to walk in a crooked and perverse generation. We can’t – but by grace, He enables us.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for always being ahead of the enemy’s game. Thank You for calling us to pray and fast. Thank You that You are an overcoming God and the One who will do it.

Hear our cry for Your cleansing power to purify Your people and activate us to carry Your purity into every place we go. We say yes and amen to what we see already. We love and trust Your Word, which tells us that You always complete what You start.

Glorify the name of Jesus in us so that He may indeed gain the reward for His suffering.

In His mighty name, amen.

Thank you Alyse for your very honest and inspirational writing and story of the clean duck despite the murky green water around it.
Thank you for the reminder that as we seek God’s face and cleansing of Jesus Blood He is always willing to wash us clean us and to present us faultless before the Throne of grace.
The world around us is so like that water and our own hearts deceitful but transformed daily, as we confess we fall short.
Above all thank you for the wonderful way you encourage, help, inspire, co ordinate zoom meetings and uplift ‘the flock’ on Canberra Declaration.
