Here’s Why Christians Should Fight the Culture War

16 October 2025

3 MINS

What might appear to be a political battle over culture is really a deeper spiritual conflict about God, truth, and the soul of our civilisation.

It’s good for Christians to fight the culture war.

Why?

Because the culture war is a spiritual war.

At first glance, the culture war appears to be about things like marriage, abortion, transgenderism, free speech and national identity.

But deeper down, the culture war is actually about God. It’s about the West rejecting its Christian roots. It’s about our civilisation throwing off all restraint, saying no to absolutes, and repudiating God’s authority over human affairs.

As James Macpherson has put it, the culture war is a subplot of the main storyline, which is the cosmic war.

Read how Psalm 2:1-3 describes the cosmic war raging around us:

Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, ‘Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.’

The culture war is a spiritual war. And in the modern West, a big part of this spiritual war is whether our civilisation will completely throw off its Christian heritage, causing us to crash and burn — or whether we will return to Christ and experience restoration and renewal.

War is a dirty word in our culture and in Christian circles. But the Bible doesn’t shy away from the metaphor of war and combat. More importantly, in the Bible, God gives us the tools we need to fight this war:

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5).

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12).

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. (Colossians 2:8).

Christians Didn’t Start the Culture War

One of the many reasons that Christians shy away from the culture war is because of the accusation that we’re somehow responsible for it.

When Australia’s political powerbrokers face pushback on culture war issues, they predictably wheel out a set of well-rehearsed lines:

“Let’s not get involved in the culture war.”

“Australians aren’t interested in US political debates.”

“So-and-so is trying to import Trump’s culture wars to our country.”

Have you heard these lines?

Consider a recent example from South Australia’s Premier.

Early last year, SA’s was going to be the first parliament in the country to hold an inquiry into gender dysphoria. But Peter Malinauskas decided to withhold a conscience vote from his party, which had the effect of killing off the inquiry before it began.

The Premier’s reason? “I am not too sure if a parliamentary inquiry that would be highly political in nature and that would only seek to perpetuate the culture wars is the best way to do a proper examination of medical policy.”

I could give you countless similar examples from high-profile Aussie politicians, including our current PM.

What these phrases all share in common is the deceptive accusation that Christians or conservatives are the ones who started the so-called culture war, or are invested in perpetuating it.

Nothing could be further from the truth. All we did was notice the culture war and decide to push back.

A Call to End the Culture War

Let’s look at the issue of gender dysphoria in particular. The man largely responsible for starting this culture war was the American sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, who used data from prostitutes and pedophiles to study orgasms in children.

It was Kinsey who reframed sexuality as a spectrum rather than a male-female binary, which paved the way for all of the toxic ideas about gender spreading in our culture today.

I could tell you a lot more about Kinsey but I don’t want to give you nightmares.

The point is, when we stand our ground and say sex is binary; men are not women; children are beautiful just as they are, no drugs or scalpels needed — we’re not starting a culture war. We are reaffirming obvious truths that have kept our civilisation sane and stable for thousands of years.

Pedophile enablers like Alfred Kinsey and his modern-day disciples might have started this particular culture war.

May we, for the sake of Christ, be the ones who end it.

    Well said Kurt.

Politicians arguing against ‘politicisation’ is an argument for bureacrat rule and against democracy & open discourse: this is an offence to our commonwealth and the public who wants to weigh in

“I could tell you a lot more about Kinsey but I don’t want to give you nightmares.”

I would rather you elaborate a bit more than this – you referenced James McPherson who writes some very abrasive content for adults by an adult. Or at least give us some idea where to go to summarise Kinsey’s ideology – I’m sure the last thing you want is to be dismissive to people doing their own investigations.

Thanks again for your boldness Kurt.

Thank you, Kurt, for this discussion. It is so true that words change in meaning and some hide other agendas behind them.
Some words have been hijacked! The word ‘culture’ once carried a meaning that appeared neutral or even inviting in earlier times which suggested enrichening an positive social traditions; but nowadays the word culture can be inflammatory because the political world has used the word ‘culture’ to bring in changes in society’s values such as gender dysphoria teaching, feminism, abortion and Gaye marriage etc.
The hard part about this is the values now brought into our country and sweeping th West happen to be anti-Christian and against the Bible and Judeo-Christian values we have built our society on. If only the new culture values had not attacked the family unit, the schools the universities and the workplace- we could have left things alone but instead the very core values of marriage, male leadership, male and female definitions, and parental rights are all under attack as we are told Laws protect the young ones wanting to s change their gender, or the ones who want to take their child to a Christian counsellor regarding this matter. We now have fines in place for the parents (Victoria was the foreunner with $10.000 fines and a jail sentence under Dan Andrews Govt), mentors, teachers, pastors who may seek to give and support a Christian view in order to protect the young from gender confusion.
So much has crept in under the guise of ‘culture ‘and all along its been implied it’s for the moral good of the nation and for our society when in fact it’s come in from anti-Christians sources-from the enemy of souls, and from those who seek ‘freedom’ from all restraint and who have no moral boundaries, and from the countries who want to pull down the West (China, Russia and the like.)
As Christians we can make a stand and speak up, write to MP’s, pray in our homes and churches, or lobby and present the way God intended us to live within the boundaries of His word which acts as a safeguard from evil and perverse ways that will cause harm to the individual, to the home and society.
Those who are making a stand in the political field need our prayers as so many are slandered, taken to court and fined. ..May God give strength to them and have mercy on our nation.

However the culture war is far deeper than Kinsey’s liberalism .
It gets to the heart of what is Christianity .
I am quite sure that Jesus would not reject a child for thinking or feeling or believing that it was in the wrong body.
That He would love them anyway ,just like a parent.

Let he is without Sin cast the first stone , as He said.

    who .
    you know a typo
But if you’re circumspect now you will see that the sub text is the restoration of paganism really and so they need to kill at least two birds with one stone .
Look at the language now about tribalism ,whose your tribe , wheres the Chief of this or that tribe , and all of the other signposts they’re putting up pointing back to the future .
They’re just not ready to be truthful yet in my opinion . And they don’t care about the ancients of elders of whatever tribe in whatever continent of country they’re talking about ,except the Druids ,in my opinion but they will use them as stepping stones to owning everything ultimately as Klaus Schwab revealed when he said “and you will own nothing “.
    allegedly .

Christians should NOT fight the culture war!

In Matthew 6:25-34 where Jesus tells his followers not to worry about their lives but to seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness. In Colossians 3:2, which says, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things”. Christians getting involved in social and political matters is is making earthly things paramount in your mind rather than Christ, Jesus states do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow can worry about itself (Matthew 6:34) and My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” (John 18:36). The point of this is to call people out of the fallen systems of the world and into allegiance with God’s kingdom.

It is stated in Jerimiah 29:5-7 Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce… Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper. The point of this is being a faithful presence within a hostile system. Jesus builds on this with his metaphors of salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16). This means the primary duty of a Christian is to live a life so radically different, so full of truth, love, integrity, and hope, that it acts as a constant, living rebuke to the corrupt system. It involves building strong families, strong churches, and strong local communities (a “parallel society”). The focus is on spreading the Gospel and living out its implications, even when it leads to persecution, because that is the how children of GOD fight on an eternal scale.

When asked about taxes, he gave his famous answer: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21). This was a masterful move. It acknowledges our civic duties to a pagan state but draws a hard line: the state has a claim on our money, but God has an absolute claim on our souls, our worship, and our ultimate allegiance.

    What should Christians do??

The most important work is evangelism and discipleship. Building the Church, Christian community and spreading the Gospels is the ultimate long-term strategy. Nothing is more important than changing hearts from the inside out. In Jude 1:23 it is stated to save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

The Church’s primary public role is not to endorse a party but to be the conscience of the nation. It must speak truth to power, call out injustice, and defend the vulnerable, regardless of which party is in charge.

When the state commands what God forbids or forbids what God commands, the Christian’s duty is to obey God. If the law mandates you affirm a lie (e.g., about human biology) or forbids you from worshipping or sharing your faith, you must disobey the state to remain faithful to God, and willingly accept the persecution that follows.

I would argue you do this by standing against culture that diminishes truth/family/individual worth/freedom and speech – ie speaking out against the evils of the other side (engaging in the culture war)

“The Church’s primary public role is … to be the conscience of the nation. … speak truth to power, call out injustice, and defend the vulnerable…”

I agree! And that is my motivation for standing firm on our/ Kurt’s side of the culture war.

I sense we agree more than we realise Trent. Culture wars are in vain if not fr(m conviction and a heart to see lives changed and people honor one another – but sinilarly I agree that the very language of ‘war’ is abrasive and love (not for people’s feelongs; but their whole created person) should be the primary attribute we display.

Thanks for your reply Trent. I don’t have time to respond to every point (though I have engaged with the arguments you’ve presented at length in other articles on this site). However, it strikes me that by pushing back against my assertion that Christians should engage in the culture war, you yourself are engaging in the culture war, though on the wrong side, in my opinion. Moreover, if this topic is a distraction from more important activities, why waste time on it!? Just a couple thoughts.

God only defends Israel .And he doesn’t wave flags or idolatrous icons .
Satan works by turning people against others He’s a home wrecker He divides the Father from his children by turning the sons ,the brothers against one another using his tools ,politics ideologies religions sports mainly .
He inserts them into communities so for example a person will hate supporters of an opposing political party or sporting team or school of thought or religion .
That’s how he takes people from God .

Wow, Iam not as smart as you guys but I do know God tells us to speak when the enemy brings lies that hurt people a draw them away from Him. God is moving His people to stand against tyranny for the protection of those who cannot defend themselves. To not speak is to agree. To not speak is to duck our responsibility to protect our brothers and sisters, that means e erroneous else who does not have the light. Thanks Kurt keep writing and speaking, opening up truth.
