Day 2: The Safest Place on Earth
Intention
To rejoice in the knowledge that every human life is sacred, created by God and deserving of love, protection, and dignity from conception to natural death.
Scripture
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
– Psalm 139:13–14
Reflection
Parents often describe the birth of their child as a “miracle.” And rightly so. For around forty weeks, the womb becomes the safest place on earth — an incredible sanctuary where new life grows. Or at least, that’s what God designed it for.
Today, heartbreakingly, the womb has become one of the most dangerous places on earth. Each year, millions of unborn babies lose their lives through abortion — more than any disease or war combined.
In Australia alone, around 80,000 lives are ended before they take their first breath. These are not just numbers; they are stories that never began, dreams that will never be lived, and voices that will never be heard.
Abortion is more than just a Christian concern — it’s a human one. Modern science confirms what Scripture declared long ago — that life begins in the womb. A pre-born child can hear, feel, and respond. By six months, they can survive outside the womb with care.
The question, then, is not whether the unborn are alive, but whether we, as a society, will acknowledge and defend their right to life.
Even our own laws reveal this tension. In Queensland, if a drunk driver kills an unborn baby, that crime can be charged as homicide. Yet the same baby can be legally aborted under different circumstances.
This contradiction exposes a deeper moral confusion — one that touches the very heart of what it means to be human.
Every right we hold dear — freedom, justice, equality — rests on one foundational truth: the right to life. Without it, all other rights crumble. For good reason has it been said: “A nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.” Who could be weaker than the child in the womb?
Some claim abortion is a matter of “women’s healthcare” or “choice.” But real compassion must include both the mother and the child. True dignity is not found in ending life but in protecting it — in offering love, support, and hope to women facing difficult pregnancies.
The overturning of Roe v Wade in the United States reignited global debate about life and freedom. Yet here in Australia, our abortion laws remain among the most extreme in the world. Late-term abortions are legal in every state and territory,
including for ‘psycho-social’ reasons. In some cases, babies who survive failed abortions are left without medical care.
These are hard truths to face, but they must be faced. The gospel calls us to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves — the unborn, the unseen, the unheard. Proverbs 31:8–9 reminds us: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”
Life is sacred because God is the Author of life. Each heartbeat, each breath, is a divine declaration of His creative power and love. When we defend life, we honour him. When we remain silent, we allow injustice to grow.
Let us, then, be a people who speak up — with truth, compassion, and courage. Let us support women in crisis, love the vulnerable, and protect the voiceless. Together, we can restore the womb to what it was meant to be: the safest place on earth.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of life and for the miracle of creation within the womb.
Forgive me for the times I’ve remained silent when I should have spoken up for the vulnerable. Give me courage to defend the unborn, compassion to love both mother and child, and wisdom to speak truth with grace.
May our nation once again cherish every life you have made.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

great article Kurt.

Chilling figures. Not just stats. Not just numbers. But actual people.
Thank you Karl. Good article.
