Day 4: Our Unchanging God
Intention
To rest in God’s unchanging mercy and plan of redemption, praying that mercy reaches those considering an abortion.
Scripture
“For I, the LORD, do not change.”
– Malachi 3:6a
Reflection
Seasons change, people change, circumstances change, but God does not change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8)! He is the Lord, and He remains constant and faithful. He is our rock, firm foundation, saviour and much more!
His plan of redemption does not change. His mercy towards us does not change — while it does come freshly day by day, it is never held back or withdrawn, but is a constant in our daily lives.
The abortion landscape in Australia does change! Laws become more horrific, and government Action Plans (e.g. the Queensland Termination of Pregnancy Action Plan) are set in place to achieve ignoble ends.
However, even in the midst of the tragic legality of abortion up to birth across the country, the light of mercy and redemption shines as a constant for women through the Pregnancy Help movement which God has raised up. For the woman considering a termination, or one who has had an abortion experience, she can phone 1300 139 313 and speak with a Pregnancy Help Australia (PHA) National Helpline worker, receive hope for her situation and be referred to a local centre for ongoing support.
That unchanging availability of mercy for women is a reflection of the unchanging constancy of God.
In a world where so much shifts and there is a lack of mercy, we can rest in the assurance that God’s mercy and plan of redemption are unwavering. No matter how challenging the circumstances or how much the cultural landscape changes, his mercy and faithfulness are available as constants in our lives. May we hold fast to this truth, offer hope to those in need, and reflect God’s unchanging mercy in all we do.
She Identified Her Fears
Elise phoned a pregnancy centre seeking to talk with someone about her unplanned pregnancy. She had an appointment for an abortion booked for the following week. However, she was feeling uneasy and emotional about it, and this confused her. She had experienced an abortion several years before and decided never to have children, ever. She could not make sense of her current uncertainty with what should have been an easy decision.
As Elise spoke with a pregnancy consultant, she identified her fears of becoming a mother, the negative words that had been spoken over her about parenting and her tendency to run away from hard things. She had the opportunity to discover the reality of the growing baby inside her by holding a life-sized foetal model and learning about the baby’s development. Elise experienced hope when she realised that she didn’t have to live in fear and doubt by believing the negativity spoken over her, and she gave herself ‘permission’ to change her mind about motherhood.
Elise cancelled the abortion appointment and continued engaging with the pregnancy centre, receiving counselling to help her build a new mindset around the value of motherhood and mentoring to help her prepare for labour, birth and mothering a newborn. Elise welcomed a beautiful baby girl several months later.

Prayer
Thank You, O God, that You do not change, that You are dependable, faithful and true.
Thank You that Your mercy comes freshly to us each day. I receive Your mercy for today.
Help me to be aware of those around me who need that mercy and to offer it freely, especially to those in challenging pregnancy situations.
Amen.
