Day 16: Generational Impact
Intention
To realise that when we side with God’s plans and blessings, it has a generational impact.
Scripture
“All the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.”
– Joshua 2:9b–11
Reflection
As a newlywed couple, we decided to buy a new lounge. Dutifully my husband loaded the lounge on the back of our trailer, and that night we sat super impressed on our comfy expensive seat. It was perfect for morning devotion or the occasional afternoon nap. I decided the lounge required “pillowfication”, so in my quest to be prudent with our finances, I headed to the bargain bin at a homewares store. I found four of the flattest throw pillows and what I thought was a lovely olive-green throw rug, set on its redemptive qualities in the right setting. The olive throw rug never seemed to hit the mark. Neither warm or inviting, it became a style piece as I puffed my flat throw pillows.
As we journeyed into parenthood last year, a small newborn lay on our lounge asleep. The afternoon sunlight flickered through the curtainless window, and the olive throw rug was hastily pinned on the window to diminish sunlight, anything to keep the baby asleep. As time moves the rug has remained on the window, and a little four-month-old baby stares in wonder at the sunlight breaking through the woven fabric of the olive throw rug/curtain. Finally, my bargain has paid off. My rug is beautiful.
The wonder of my son staring into a window rug reminded me of a real redemptive story, Rahab. Rahab was a harlot living in Jericho with a window that backed onto the city wall. Rahab helped two Israeli spies hide in her roof. Jericho was a fortified city in the promised land. Its inhabitants knew of the power of Israel and Israel’s God.
Rahab mislead the king of Jericho by saying that the spies had left her house. This allowed them to flee out of her window in the wall. Rahab asked that her family be saved, and the spies agreed by tying a red cord on her window.
In Joshua 6:17, Jericho is destroyed but Rahab and her family and those in her house were saved. Rahab dwelt in Israel and sided with the one true God; a harlot became a heroine of faith. Rahab’s story is amazing. She protected her family, gave the spies information critical to their battleplans and was protected by Israel.
But God sees more than just a present circumstance. His mercy and redemption are manifold through the generations of Rahab’s family. Rahab had a son called Obed, and Obed had a son called Boaz, a man who showed mercy to a Moabite named Ruth and stepped in as her kinsmen redeemer. They had Jesse and Jesse was the father of David — the ancestor of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5).
When we side with God’s plans and blessings it has a generational impact.
God’s mercy and redemption is for us too. God can take the most hopeless situations, cover us in his mercy and redeem.
I think the rug will eventually retire to our linen cupboard, brought out for a shepherd’s costume at the nativity play or for rainy day lounge room forts.

Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, we thank you that you’re redeeming even the most hopeless situations, that your love and mercy are drawing broken men and women back to you. We thank you Lord that you’re weaving the threads of our family’s legacy both now and in the generations to come. We speak over our family linage mighty men and women of God who stand for truth and righteousness, who work in all spheres of society. In Jesus’ name, amen.
