Celebrate Father’s Day! Rejoicing in God’s Good Gift of Fatherhood
Father’s Day is this Sunday, 1 September! This is a wonderful time to celebrate God’s good gift of fatherhood.
At a time when the value of fatherhood is often diminished, Father’s Day is a welcome pause in our calendar to remember the importance of faith, family and life.
It’s also a reminder of our society’s Judeo–Christian foundation, which prioritised the importance of fathers and family. By celebrating Father’s Day, we are honouring our family-centred heritage.
To all the fathers, we wish you a very happy Father’s Day this Sunday!
Dads4Kids partners with the Canberra Declaration and many other Christian-based charities. This year, like past years, Dads4Kids has released an ad to be shown on national TV this weekend to encourage dads and good parenting. Watch the one-minute video celebrating dads below!
Father’s Day was originally a Christian holiday! The Coptic Church celebrated fatherhood from the fifth century on St Joseph’s Day. The Catholic Church did the same from the 14th century.
But in its modern form, it also began as a Christian holiday. American Sonora Dodd believed her father should be honoured for raising her and her siblings after the death of her mother.
So she approached her pastor, and in 1910 the first Father’s Day was held, spreading throughout the USA and then to the rest of the world.
Our earthly fathers are an imperfect representation of our Heavenly Father. Astounding though it is, fathers are tasked with modelling the love, care, nurture and discipline of God!
Psalm 103:13 says, “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” Proverbs 3:12 teaches us, “The Lord disciplines the one he loves, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.”
Dads are incredibly vital. One of the most tragic realities in Australia today is that close to one million children go to sleep without their father in the house. A restoration of fatherhood is desperately needed in our nation.
David Blankenhorn said, “Fatherlessness is the most harmful demographic trend of this generation.” Dads4Kids has today released a new version of their breakthrough research document called, “The Facts on Fatherlessness.” We cannot fix the fatherhood problem in Australia overnight. But we can do our part by honouring our fathers in our families this Father’s Day.
So, this Sunday, let’s appreciate our fathers, give thanks for their vital role, and honour this national day. Watch the 30-second video giving appreciation and thanks to fathers in the video below!
Once again, we celebrate the unique contribution that dads bring to our families and society. Let’s pull all the stops out for the fathers of Australia. Wish every father you see Happy Father’s Day!
Yours for celebrating God’s good gift of fatherhood,
Samuel Hartwich & Warwick Marsh
