Day 14 – Mercy for Leaders: Praying for Those in Authority
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
~ 1 Timothy 2:1-2
It is easy to feel anger or frustration when leaders make decisions that go against Biblical values, especially concerning the sanctity of life. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard — not to respond with contempt, but with mercy and prayer.
God’s Word reminds us that all authority is established by Him (Romans 13:1), and our responsibility is to intercede for those in leadership. Leaders often face immense pressures, conflicting interests, and spiritual battles. While their decisions may cause us grief, our response should mirror God’s heart — a heart full of mercy, compassion, and truth.
Jesus exemplified this on the cross when He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). If Christ could extend mercy to those who crucified Him, how much more should we extend mercy to our leaders, praying for their salvation and Godly wisdom?
In the recent Queensland election, we witnessed a long-awaited shift in government after more than a decade. The excitement of having conservative, pro-life Members of Parliament was, however, abruptly challenged. The 41st Honourable Premier, Mr Crisafulli, made the unprecedented decision to ban any discussion on abortion laws in the Queensland Parliament.
This decision has many layers worth exploring, but for now, I want to focus on the deep sense of disappointment and betrayal I felt, particularly toward the Christian MPs whom I believed would champion the cause of life.
In my frustration, I sought quiet time with the Lord, hoping for answers. His response was unmistakably clear: “Pray for and bless every member of Parliament, including Mr Crisafulli.”
At that moment, I felt much like Job, demanding answers from God while being completely unaware of His greater plans. The Holy Spirit gently brought to mind God’s response to Job in chapters 38 through 40 — a humbling reminder of His sovereignty and wisdom beyond human understanding.
Convicted and softened, I prayed for forgiveness and began to bless Mr. Crisafulli and his cabinet, releasing them into God’s hands. Quickly, I began to align my heart with the Father’s, Who calls us to mercy and intercession rather than judgment.
Reflecting on my life, I recognise that I have often received undeserved mercy. My Deliverer has extended grace to me countless times, even when I wouldn’t have shown the same mercy to myself. Because of His love, I can now love others, and because of His mercy, I can extend mercy to those in need — even those whose decisions I profoundly disagree with.
This journey reminded me that our prayers are not just for the desired outcomes, but for God’s will to be done. When we bless our leaders, we position ourselves to reflect Christ’s heart and trust in His ultimate plan.
Prayer Points

- Intercede for their hearts to be softened to the truth about the sanctity of life.
- Ask God to help you respond to ungodly decisions with mercy and prayer, instead of anger and disappointment.
- Pray for peace and righteousness to prevail in government decisions.
- Pray to have Heaven’s perspective on things we do not understand.
- Ask Jesus to walk into areas of your life where there is dullness and a lack of understanding. (Worship song 1)
- Declare that generations to come will enthrone the name of Jesus to the 1000th generation. (Worship song 2)
- Declare that every single life that is meant born will do so to give Glory to God as none of them will be lost through abortion. (Worship song 2)

Prayer
Father, I lift up our leaders to You. Grant them wisdom, discernment, and a heart that values life as You do. Forgive them where they fall short and draw them closer to You. Help us to respond with mercy and love, praying faithfully for their guidance. May Your truth and justice prevail in our nation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Further Prayer Points
- Pray that the Spirit of Truth goes forth to make abortion unthinkable in Australia.
- That the Body of Christ unifies in prayer and advocacy, upholding the sanctity of life from conception to natural death in our unique spheres of influence — speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.
- Pray for the Lord to bless and empower men (according to Malachi 4:6) to lead in the protection of women and children.
- That Australians will vote according to the defence of LIFE in all the upcoming elections. That the political leaders who have muzzled the politicians from any discussion or bills about abortion — repent, and these bans be lifted in Qld, SA and Federally. That the Babies Born Alive (Human Rights — Children Born Alive Protection Bill 2021) tabled in the Australian Federal Parliament be passed with no more delay, legislating across Australia that babies born alive after a failed abortion, receive proper medical care and legal protection.
- That every church across Australia be a trusted place of mercy and compassion, operating as a House of Refuge. Creating havens of safety and acceptance for those experiencing an unplanned/crisis pregnancy or who have been hurt by a previous abortion.
- For Hubs of Love to be established in every city and town in the nation.
- Women and men in crisis to phone the compassionate and confidential Pregnancy Help Australia or visit a life-affirming pregnancy centre — being protected from pro-abortion doctors or clinics.
- That the abortionist doctors and nurses involved will have the spiritual veil of deception removed to see the humanity of the unborn — causing deep repentance. Help the Body of Christ to be ready to lead them in healing.
- We pray for every state and territory of Australia to arise in the cause of defending life in the womb from the tragedy of abortion and come together to walk for life. A blessing on the “Walk for Life Adelaide” on 8 February 2025 and “March for Life” Brisbane — date TBA, Mackay “March for the Babies” in October, “March for the Babies” Melbourne, Perth’s Rally for Life in May, and for all Territories and States to join in and hold a Walk for Life in their city/region.
- Pray for Love Adelaide’s Walk for Life 2025 on 8th February from 10am-12pm to grow in momentum and fruitfulness. Pray for effective doors of favour to open, health and strength for the leaders, speakers and volunteers, for finances, safety and perfect weather.

I praise God for this wisdom from the Word of God . How often I have sat listening to the daily evening news ( as a believer in Jesus Christ ) and added my disparaging remarks about leaders
making wrong / bad decisions ! One day GOD in His mercy highlighted 1 Timothy 2 : 1 – 6
I repented of my loud criticisms before HIM and have been encouraging other believers to be ware of this pit fall . THE WORDS “ FIRST OF ALL “ showed the priority of this prayer too in E V E R Y prayer gathering .
