The Lord Reigns Over Australia and the Nations: Day 13
Intention
To confidently rest in knowing that the Lord reigns over Australia and the nations and that He is always at work to accomplish His purposes.
Scripture
“The Lord reigns! Let the peoples tremble.
He is enthroned between the cherubim.
Let the earth quake.
The Lord is great in Zion;
he is exalted above all the peoples.
Let them praise your great
and awe-inspiring name.
He is holy.”
– Psalm 99:1–3
Reflection
As Australia approached the 2025 federal election on 3 May, I was one of many who prayed earnestly for godly leadership.
I brought my concerns to the King of kings, asking Him to intervene. I hoped – perhaps naively – for leaders who would overturn ungodly laws, reverse harmful decisions, and dismantle policies promoting unrighteousness.
I say naively, but what I really mean is that although I couldn’t see a worldly solution, my faith was in God to intervene. So, I prayed.
Now, in the days after the election, do I believe God answered that prayer?
Yes, I do.
It took some time and perspective, but I see it now. The result was unexpected, even dramatic – a seismic shift that no one predicted. I certainly didn’t anticipate God moving in this way.
But as I step back, I see His hand at work. He is moving – quietly, deliberately, purposefully – arranging things for what lies ahead. God is up to something.
And importantly, I want to reassure you: His hand is still on our nation.
Here are three reasons we can hold on to that confidence:
1. God is positioning things globally and nationally for His purposes.
God’s plans are unfolding across the world, and Australia is, of course, a part of that. Regardless of election outcomes, it is always the case that God is at work to accomplish His purposes. As the psalmist exclaims:
“God reigns over the nations;
God is seated on his holy throne.
The nobles of the nations assemble
as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings of the earth belong to God;
he is greatly exalted.” (Psalm 47:8–9)
2. Earthly governments may fail, but our focus must stay on God.
The political environment in Jesus’ time was deeply corrupt and unjust. Herod Antipas had John the Baptist beheaded. The Pharisees demanded Jesus’ death, and Pilate cowardly gave in. Later, the early Church endured brutal persecution under Herod Agrippa and Nero.
It’s right to pray for godly government (1 Timothy 2:1–2). But our focus cannot be on the systems of this world. Our eyes must stay fixed on God, and on Him alone. The psalmist reminds us of this vital truth when he writes:
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1–2)
3. Our nation’s deepest need is Christ.
Now more than ever, I am reminded how desperately Australia needs Jesus. He is the only true answer, and always has been.
So, GO!
Go and proclaim the gospel. Declare that Jesus is King and Lord over all. His reign is real. We either submit to Him and live under His rule, or we resist and suffer the consequences. Every other allegiance is temporary rebellion – a deception that will not stand.
Paul puts it so simply, yet so powerfully:
“And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
“Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:7–11)
God is still on the throne. So, let us keep praying and proclaiming Jesus.

Prayer
Lord, thank You that You reign over the nations. You are seated on Your holy throne. Lord, we repent for not recognising this.
We repent that as a nation and in our government, we have rejected you as King. We seek to impose a rule that defies Yours. In doing so, we sin and we bring suffering upon ourselves. We are blind. We act, genuinely thinking we are doing good and yet, in Your eyes, it is wicked.
Lord, humbly on my knees I ask, come. Come in a radical way, a tsunami wave, that shifts minds, changes hearts, delivers people from their trauma and pain, crushes anxiety and confusion and turns rejection, anger and bitterness away.
Replace these things with freedom, truth, compassion and peace, which only come from knowing You, Jesus. In the name of the Prince of Peace, we pray, amen.
