In a time marked by volatility and disruption, leaders from Power to Change reflect on a growing openness to Christ in the culture — especially among Gen Z — and the possibility of a coming revival that could reshape Australia’s faith landscape.

As part of the global Campus Crusade for Christ International (CCCI) movement, Power to Change has a history in Australia dating back to 1967. While our beginnings were in university campus ministry, and we remain strong in that area, our broadened focus of more recent years adds youth, digital ministry, church movements and foreign aid.

The vision we have always shared with the international movement is to win people to Christ, to build them up as disciple-makers, and to send them out in the power of the Holy Spirit to do likewise. While this has never changed, the strategies and tactics regularly can.

Our National Director Geoff Folland regularly reminds us that we live in “VUCA” times, marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. And with every passing year, this is only more true. While it means thoughtful and constant prayerful reflection on how we advance the cause of the Gospel in Australia and beyond, it also means that the fields are ever more “white unto harvest”.

Stirrings of Revival

Analysts speak of a “jobs catastrophe” that is already upon us, due to rapidly advancing technology disruption from Artificial Intelligence. Global geopolitics present scarier scenarios than seen since the Cuban missile crisis. Cost-of-living pressures from a volatile and uncertain economy add further angst to the Gen Z generation, aged roughly 15 to 30.

In prayer, many are discerning a changing in the tide and seeing the firstfruits of it in (particularly) young people coming to Christ in record numbers. There is an openness, a sincerity and a determination not seen in a long time. God is at work in the harvest.

My journey with Power to Change has only recently begun. God clearly spoke to my wife, Gail, and me through the announcement of a new version of the Jesus film. We sensed in this a massive Gospel opportunity and we knew God was calling us to help in any way we could to prepare the Australian church for a future harvest… one that may not be more than a few years away.

While it is not my normal habit to speak with any kind of certainty about the future, I am nonetheless certain that an awakening — perhaps a revival — is only a few years away. It accords with a date like 2033, and with the objectives of the Australian Evangelism Roundtable, which is very exciting.

Gail and I are working on a project with the working title of Groundswell, to stir up the Body of Christ toward effective “gospelling” and disciple-making in this next season of preparation for a coming move of God. We are exploring opportunities for rich and fruitful collaboration across the Body of Christ. Indeed, there is no other way to get the work done!
