Inside the ABC’s Darkest Secret: The 1975 Pedophile Broadcast

5 September 2025

4.3 MINS

In 1975, the ABC aired a disturbing interview where pedophiles boasted about exploiting children. The national broadcaster later suppressed the tape, misled Parliament, and continues shielding itself from accountability today. With acknowledgment to The Richardson Post, where this exposé first appeared.

In July 1975, the ABC broadcasted a radio interview so grotesque, so destructive, that it should have forever been remembered as a cautionary tale in the history of Australian media. Instead, the ABC has buried it, gagged access to it, and — most alarmingly — lied to Parliament about its very existence.

The interview, aired on Lateline on 14 July 1975, gave a national platform to predators who openly boasted about preying on children. The host, Richard Neville, was himself a self-confessed pederast. He and three other adult men, along with a teenager who admitted sexual involvement with older men, spoke for 42 minutes in tones that were flippant, jovial, and chillingly unapologetic.

The men described how they groomed boys with gifts, targeted children from broken families, and loitered near schools to find victims. One participant even admitted to abusing a three-year-old when he was twelve — an admission met not with outrage, but laughter. Another bragged of maintaining sexual relations with up to twelve boys at a time, while others declared that boys as young as twelve were capable of giving “rational consent” to sex with men decades older.

Instead of condemning this depravity, the then-Chairman of the ABC, Richard Downing, defended it, declaring that “in general, men will sleep with young boys and that’s the sort of thing the community ought to know about.”

This was not journalism. It was the normalisation of child exploitation. And it remains a stain on the ABC’s record.

1975

On September 22, 1975, the Sydney Morning Herald reported on ABC’s “pederasty” program, police complaints, and the Reverend Fred Nile’s response.

The Gag Order

One might think that in 2025, Australians would be able to hear this recording as part of our collective reckoning with the failures of the past. But they cannot — not because of any court order or police investigation, but because of the ABC itself.

In 2023, I obtained a copy of the recording from the ABC’s archives. But in doing so, I was forced to sign a contract that effectively gagged me from sharing it. The “personal use release form” demanded that the material be kept strictly for private viewing. It explicitly forbade broadcast “by any means, including but not limited to communication via the internet or any social media platform,” and banned inclusion in “publications, sound recordings or media projects.”

In other words, while the ABC still holds the tape in its archives, it has ensured that ordinary Australians cannot listen to it. The public — whose taxes fund the ABC — are denied the chance to hear one of the most shameful episodes in the broadcaster’s history.

When I sought permission to publish excerpts on YouTube, the ABC’s legal department immediately refused. Their justification was simple: the ABC does not license such content for social media distribution. The result is clear: unless the ABC chooses to release the tape itself, Australians remain locked out from their own history.

A Lie to Parliament

As appalling as this censorship is, what is worse is that the ABC misled the Federal Parliament about the tape’s very existence.

In October 2018, former Senator Eric Abetz asked the ABC directly, through the Senate Standing Committee on Environment and Communications, about the 1975 broadcast. The ABC’s written reply was emphatic: “The ABC has no records of the interview.”

That was false.

Five years later, I was able to obtain the very recording the ABC swore it did not possess. The ABC’s 2018 statement was not an error of memory, nor a misplacement in the archives. It was a lie — an institutional deception of the Parliament of Australia.

For a public broadcaster, funded by taxpayers and accountable to Parliament, there can be no greater betrayal. When the ABC lies to the Senate, it lies to the people of Australia.

Why It Matters

Some might dismiss this as ancient history. After all, 1975 is half a century ago. But the scandal is not only about what was said then — it is about how the ABC continues to behave now.

First, the interview contained admissions of criminal conduct under New South Wales law at the time. To trivialise or hide such crimes insults victims of child sexual abuse, both past and present.

Second, the ABC’s legal gag prevents public scrutiny. Australians are not allowed to hear how their national broadcaster once platformed predators, nor how those predators justified their abuse. By locking the recording away, the ABC shields itself from accountability.

Third, the ABC’s deception of Parliament in 2018 undermines the very foundations of democratic oversight. If a taxpayer-funded institution can lie to a Senate committee and face no consequences, then parliamentary scrutiny itself is rendered meaningless.

A Call for Action

The law provides a remedy. Under subsection 78(3A) of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983, the Minister for Communications has the power to direct the ABC to publish content if it is in the national interest. If ever there was a case that met this threshold, it is this one.

The Minister should exercise that power now. Ordering the ABC to release the 1975 Lateline interview would:

  • Shine a light on a dark chapter in Australia’s media history.
  • Expose the depraved logic predators used to justify abuse, arming the public against such rhetoric today.
  • Hold the ABC accountable for both its past platforming of pederasts and its 2018 deception of Parliament.
  • Align with the government’s stated commitment to protecting children from sexual exploitation.

The Truth Must Out

For nearly fifty years, the ABC has carried this disgrace in its archives. First it defended it. Then it suppressed it. Then it lied about it.

Australians deserve the truth — not because it is easy to confront, but because it is necessary. To understand how institutions once enabled predators, to prevent history from repeating, and to restore trust in public accountability.

The ABC cannot be allowed to bury its past any longer. If it will not release the tape voluntarily, then the Minister must compel it.

The time for secrecy is over. The Australian people have a right to hear this recording, to learn from it, and to ensure that no institution ever again aids in the normalisation of crimes against children.

Why should this tape be released to the pubic? If it was so bad, and it seems to be, why should it be released now? To embolden peodophiles so that they can think “we were doing it then so we can keep doing it now?

It is astounding that this has come to light 50 years after the event. Thank you John Adams for bringing the matter to the light. It seems to me that a full investigation with appropriate consequences for the ABC needs to be meted out.

It’s because of people with attitudes like you, that this stuff is covered up and children are still being abused

Perhaps watch the videos presented on this page before commenting.

I’m old enough to remember as a child, adults talking about certain pedo politicians but only a very few confronted them about it

It was all brushed under the carpet.

You need to go down some rabbit holes including what Hillary Clinton was really doing in Hati

Pedophilia is pandemic and needs a BIG BRIGHT LIGHT shone on this dark evil, otherwise children are going to continue to suffer, AND pedo’s are going to continue with their filthy perversions

It’s about time everyone stood up and said enough is enough

All the talk of protecting children and stamping out child abuse by, politicians, police and mainstream media is absolute rubbish.
If any of them were serious about the problem they would use all of their powers to protect children. When our daughter was a minor her employer started to groom her in different ways. We went to the police immediately on finding out and were told that they couldn’t investigate just on the word of our daughter and that she needed to record a phone call with him. What 14 year old could go through that?
Completely let down by Qld police who claim to be serious about protecting children. They are more interested in protecting important people than children.

I just finished watching/listening to IOTP on You Tube “Australia’s Dark Evil from 1975!” moments later You Tube removed it for “Violating community guidelines” yet it was only audio, this was no doubt done at the behest of the ABC/Australian Government to cover this up. However I had the good sense as suggested by the hosts in the intro to download it immediately before I even watched it. It is a disgrace this program ever occurred in 1975 and an outrage that the ABC and the Federal Government are lying about, well the cat’s out of the bag and I will share widely, maybe I will upload to Bit Chute and Rumble who will not censor this. BTW it still exists on You Tube as a googlevideos. link which I also have and will share here if allowed/wanted but converted to a tinyurl/link as the link is quite long. This interview was conducted by Richard Neville who’s Wikipedia entry has a paragraph on his own pederasty which was unknown to the pederast guests in 1975 judging by statements made. I will post a working link in a follow up comment.
