#1 Aussie Hip-Hop: Victor Claye is Taking Jesus to Australia

Storming the nation’s secular music charts, Victor Claye is breaking new ground for independent Christian artists in Australia. With his new single ‘I Have Decided’ out on April 10, and a debut album dropping later this year, your ‘Old Mate’ DJ Paine catches up with Australia’s hottest gospel hip-hop voice and hears the story behind Victor’s unshakeable joy.

In the streets of Adelaide, South Australia, Victor Claye is crafting a sound that feels both deeply personal and universally hopeful. Born in Sierra Leone in 1993 amid the shadows of civil war, Claye’s early life was marked by displacement. Fleeing to Guinea at age five, then finding refuge in Australia just in time to celebrate his eleventh birthday on new soil.

Today, this husband and father of three energetic boys, support worker, mentor to young people, and pastor at City International Christian Church channels his improbable journey into gospel hip-hop and afrobeats that pulse with redemption and infectious happiness.

Claye’s music doesn’t preach from a pedestal; instead, it invites listeners into a story of grace rediscovered. Raised in a Christian household where African church rhythms were as natural as breathing, he drifted in his teens, chasing worldly freedoms that promised more fun than faith ever could. But at around 18, rock bottom arrived: poor choices, isolation, and a raw awareness of his own brokenness.

Moving back in with his grandmother, he returned to church, where Pastor Ralph Legge’s sermons felt eerily tailored: “It seems like he had been following me around and he knew… all those things that I was feeling really guilty about. ”Week after week, the conviction built until surrender came.

That turning point echoes the Apostle Paul’s words in Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” For Claye, grace wasn’t abstract theology; it was the lifeline that pulled him from guilt to gratitude. He got baptised a couple of years later, fully committing: “Are you in or are you out?” God seemed to ask.

Claye chose all in.

Music entered Victor’s life almost unexpectedly. Dreams of wearing number seven for the Socceroos gave way when, encouraged by his wife (then girlfriend), he joined the church choir to fill a need for male voices.

What began as humble service revealed natural talent. Dropping video game addictions (another act of surrender to God) freed time for piano experimentation. Soon, hip-hop flows blended with afrobeats grooves, 90s/2000s hip hop influences, and gospel melodies.

The result? Tracks like ‘Pass Me The Mic’ (which climbed to #4 on Australia’s OZ 5 Top Tunes chart), ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Citizen of Heaven’, and the explosive 2026 single ‘Love Like This’ on Australian Christian Records.

Produced by Aaron Duff, ‘Love Like This’, released February 13, 2026, has become a phenomenon.

Inspired by 1 John 3:1 “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” – the track is a festival favourite, catchy hip-hop with easy-to-follow lyrics and a super positive message.

Victor captures it perfectly: “Believing in true love is risky, vulnerable, even dangerous… There’s no love like Jesus, not one!” It’s soulful, party-starting, and unapologetically Christ-centred.

The song’s success is undeniable. Reaching a high of #2 on the national (and secular) AMRAP chart, #1 on the metro chart, and #1 on the Hip Hop & RnB Chart, and the longest stay (4 weeks) of any song in the top ten. This breakthrough owes much to the dedicated support from Christian radio stations across Australia! Even more encouraging, significant airplay is coming from non-Christian community stations, allowing a boldly Jesus-focused track to reach ears far beyond church walls.

In a genre landscape where hip-hop often struggles for airtime on Christian formats, this crossover momentum is ground-breaking, and I believe Spirit-led.

Claye’s life offstage mirrors his music: grounded, joyful, relational. Married nine years to his supportive wife Nadine, who’s been integral to his story, he raises three young sons while leading his church’s gospel choir, mentoring vulnerable youth through his day job and pastoral role, and serving his community. His happiness is palpable… warm, approachable, quick to laugh, and quicker to credit God and collaborators like Aaron at Australian Christian Records.

Looking ahead, Claye’s trajectory is exciting. Fresh off this chart surge, he’s building toward a full album slated for later 2026, promising more energetic hip-hop, afrobeats, and versatile expressions of faith. He’s already performed at Christian festivals like Freedom (Qld), Seek Jesus (Vic), and Heartsong (SA), and he’s open to churches, schools, youth events… anywhere the message can land!

In an industry where success often feels fleeting, Claye’s rise feels purposeful. His work, whether rapping about real hope, pastoring, or mentoring, reflects a purpose prepared long before stages or studios. He reminds me of Psalm 30:5 as we talk over Zoom:

“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”

Victor Claye's debut album is dropping later in 2026.

From war-torn childhood to refugee resettlement, from prodigal wandering to joyful surrender, Claye’s morning has arrived indeed, and his music radiates that light.

On a personal note: I’ve been meaning to chat with Victor for months! Our paths have crossed in the same Christian hip-hop circles through mutual friends in Krosswerdz community and beyond, but timing finally aligned for a great conversation.

Hearing his warmth, humility, and genuine excitement about what God is doing makes it clear: Victor Claye isn’t just another fame-seeking music artist… he’s a talent to watch, a warm man of God whose happiness in Christ is contagious.

In a world craving real hope, I think his voice matters. Independent Aussie artists like Victor Claye remind us that God’s grace always wins, and joy can still sound this good!
