Across Australia and the rest of the Western world, Christians are increasingly finding themselves treated as unwelcome because of their beliefs. Social hostility is growing simply for holding to traditional Christian convictions. How should Christians respond?

For generations, the foundations of Western civilisation were deeply shaped by Christianity. Its teachings influenced our understanding of human dignity, charity, justice, morality, and the belief that every person is created with inherent worth because they bear the image of God. Churches stood at the centre of communities, Scripture shaped public life, and Christian beliefs were not viewed as something strange or dangerous, but as a vital part of the cultural fabric of the West.

But something has changed.

Across Western nations, Christianity is no longer simply being questioned — it is increasingly being rejected, ridiculed, and pushed towards the margins of society. The beliefs that shaped generations are now often portrayed as outdated, harmful, or incompatible with the modern world. For many Christians, the concern is not that society has different opinions. Disagreement has always existed. The concern is that the conversation itself is changing.

A society that once encouraged debate is increasingly moving towards dismissal. A society that once allowed competing ideas to exist side by side is becoming more hostile towards certain beliefs (Christian and Jewish). And for many Christians, the question is becoming unavoidable: what happens when a culture no longer wants to debate Christianity, but wants Christians to remain silent?

This is the reality many believers feel they are facing today.

Christianity Increasingly Marginalised in the West

Across the Western world, Christians are increasingly finding themselves blacklisted, excluded, or treated as unwelcome because of their beliefs. Some believers have faced rejection within their own communities, professional consequences, and social hostility simply for holding to traditional Christian convictions. At the same time, Christians are witnessing churches decline, biblical beliefs being removed or challenged within public institutions, and growing pressure to separate their faith from everyday life.

In workplaces, universities, schools, and public discussions, many Christians feel that openly expressing historic Christian beliefs can come with consequences. The issue is not merely disagreement — disagreement is a normal part of a free society. The deeper concern is that many believers feel they are no longer being invited into a conversation, but are instead being pushed out of it.

The issue is not whether every person must agree with Christianity. Christianity has always welcomed discussion, debate, and the pursuit of truth. The early Church engaged with philosophers and critics; Christians throughout history have defended their beliefs through reason, evidence, and dialogue.

Christians Are Called to Engage with the Culture

But what exactly are Christians defending? It is not simply a cultural tradition, a political position, or a desire to return to the past. At its core, Christians are defending the truth that every human being is created in the image of God, that human dignity comes from our Creator, and that people should have the freedom to openly live according to their deeply held convictions. We are defending the belief that truth exists beyond personal preference, that morality is not merely shaped by changing cultural trends, and that every person has a purpose found in Jesus Christ.

As we explored in our recent Here I Stand Podcast episode on this topic, the challenge facing Christians today is not simply responding to hostility, but having the courage to stand for truth while continuing to reflect the love and compassion of Christ. Christians are not called to silence those who disagree, but to engage with them openly while defending the freedom to express and live according to their beliefs.

Hostility: Real, not Imagined

The concern is not simply something Christians are imagining or feeling in isolation. Increasingly, evidence is emerging that many believers across Australia are experiencing this growing tension firsthand.

The revelations from the latest Australian Christian Freedom Index provide a stark warning about the growing challenges facing Christians living in our so-called ‘God’s Country’. John Martin, the National Coordinator at Young Conservatives for Christ (YCFC), recently published an article detailing his own close encounter with ‘cancel culture’ and the hostility that can arise simply because someone openly expresses Christian beliefs. His experience serves as a reminder that this issue is not theoretical. Behind the statistics are real people — Christians who are facing criticism, exclusion, and attempts to silence them because they refuse to abandon their faith.

Cancel culture is not merely about disagreement. A free society must allow disagreement. The problem arises when people are no longer willing to discuss ideas, but instead attempt to destroy the reputation, opportunities, or livelihoods of those who hold different beliefs. When Christians are targeted not because of their actions, but because of their convictions, it raises serious questions about the future of genuine freedom of belief in Australia.

The warning of Sodom and Gomorrah was not simply about one city thousands of years ago. It was a warning about what happens when societies reject God and place themselves above his truth. It was a warning that cultures can reach a point where they no longer recognise the difference between freedom and rebellion, between tolerance and hostility towards righteousness.

How Should Christians Respond?

Yet Christ himself warned that this opposition would come. “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first” (John 15:18). Christianity has never been built upon the approval of the world, because the One we follow was rejected, mocked, persecuted, and crucified before he rose victorious.

The West now faces a defining moment. Will it continue to protect genuine freedom of thought and belief, or will Christianity become something that must be hidden away to be accepted?

Even if our communities reject us, our institutions abandon us, and even those closest to us turn away because of our faith, we must remember the words of Scripture: “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord” (Romans 14:8).

They may reject our beliefs. They may attempt to silence our voices. They may push Christians to the margins of society.

But they cannot separate us from Christ.

For he is “the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22:13).

Kingdoms rise and fall. Cultures change. The approval of man fades.

But Jesus Christ remains forever.
