MEDIA RELEASE

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL 2019

For immediate circulation

Rev Fred Nile MLC makes the following comments in relation to the introduction of the cosponsored “Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019” in the Legislative Assembly:

· “The latest attempt to legalise abortion in NSW illustrates the moral bankruptcy of the state’s political leadership.”

· “Neither the state nor federal government campaigned on abortion in this year’s elections; the concerted effort to push this bill through the lower house therefore shows that this is an elite agenda being pushed by politicians on the people of NSW.”

· “I don’t understand why the government cannot find time to allow debate on some private members’ bills, such as my bill to guarantee religious liberty which was called for by the federal Ruddock Review, but others, such as this abortion bill, are afforded time in Parliament.”

· “Abortion is a controversial and divisive issue because the public is almost never fully informed about what is really at stake. Yet reckless bills such as these are pushed through our legislature. Is this what the people of New South Wales voted for?”

· “This bill will force a conscientious objector to refer a women who thinks she wants an abortion to a provider who is willing to abort the child. The bill effectively forces a conscientious objector to participate in the abortion by making the referral mandatory.”

· “The bill goes far beyond liberalising access to abortion. It actively undermines the freedom of conscience of medical practitioners. It is a tyrannical piece of legislation that enforces secular morality on everyone. This is not the kind of law that should be passed in a free and democratic society.”

Members of the public who are concerned about the impact this law will have are encouraged to contact the co-sponsors of the bill at their electoral addresses:
