You’ve Read The Babylon Bee, But Have You Heard of Comedian JP Sears?
Satire is as old as the hills, but somehow it never gets old.
I’m not sure about you, but I’ve loved the content flowing out of U.S. Christian satire site The Babylon Bee. They were especially on-point during the many months of covid madness last year, not to mention the U.S. election — providing a humorous reprieve from the often farcical news cycle.
Satire is powerful, not just because it provides us with comic relief, but because of its ability to highlight the follies, vices and corruption of those in power and shame them into improvement. This, after all, is the goal of satire: the betterment of society by causing those who harm it to take a good, hard look in the mirror.
Monty Python is perhaps the enduring Western icon of satire. Consider that much of their derision was aimed at Christianity — and this makes sense, given the cultural sway still held by the church in the 1970s-80s.
While The Babylon Bee is known to give the odd well-deserved jab to Christians, the site’s bread and butter is a critique of all that is Woke. And this tells us something insightful about our cultural moment: illiberal secularism now has the cultural ascendency in the West.
How else could The Babylon Bee’s silly gags attract 8 million visitors every month? And why else would social media sites like Twitter and Facebook keep censoring them? The Bee’s rebuke-filled wisecracks obviously pose a threat to the powers that be.
Another brilliant satirist you may not have come across yet, but you must know about, is JP Sears. He’s accumulated some 200 million views on YouTube by satirising the New Age wellness craze, and more lately, the excesses of American progressivism — all with his characteristic deadpan deliveries and synthetic smiles.
His breakaway hit was How To Become Gluten Intolerant from his Ultra Spiritual Life series back in 2015. There is lots to laugh at in his early material.
But as Sears has turned his attention to the wacky world of American politics, he’s only become funnier. How to Be a Woke White Person is an absolute must-watch:
