Day 10: The Battle Won

10 May 2022

3.6 MINS

Intention

In 2 Chronicles 20, we see one of the greatest examples of worship connected to breakthrough in all of the Bible.

Scripture

“You will not need to fight in this battle.
Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord,
Who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’
Do not fear or be dismayed;
tomorrow go out against them,
for the Lord is with you.”
— 2 Chronicles 20:17

Reflection

As we all know, and the story goes, Jehosephat and his army get word that a great army is arrayed against them, and the potential outcome is not favourable. After a short series of events, we see perhaps the most bizarre fighting strategy and surprising victory in all of military history. Jehosephat’s army steps into battle; breaks out in a chorus of singing and celebration, and the battle is won.

What a surprising strategy and outcome! There are a few key things, however, that I get from this story that are applicable to the battles we face today and the victories we desire to see.

Point 1: When the battle comes, first enquire of the Lord.

When the army came against the people, the very first thing that they did was enquire of the Lord. Let our first priority in the midst of battle be to enquire of the Lord. I call this the secret place: a place of prayer, worship and personal intimacy.

Point 2: In the secret place, God speaks with a promise and a strategy.

It was in that place of prayer and enquiry that we see the word of the Lord come through Jahaziel saying “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” He continues, “You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you. Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you”.

When God spoke, it was a word that carried hope, confidence and strategy! In the secret place of prayer, worship and enquiry, let us be diligent to listen to His voice and the things He speaks, because the things He speaks will be what we need for the final outcome.

Point 3: We will still need to go into battle.

Notice how God didn’t remove the Israelites from the battle. The battle still went ahead, and they were still expected to attend. They did, however, enter the battle standing in confidence in the promises of God.

We know that many of the battles we face today in our lives, will not go away by themselves, and we need to fight. We do know, however, that we are not alone in the battle and that God is indeed with us.

Point 4: Stand on the promise with thanksgiving.

In the midst of the battle, the singers were singing “GIVE THANKS, to the Lord for his faithful love continues forever.” Why give thanks? Because they were standing on the word that God had given them in the secret place. As far as Jehoshaphat and his army were concerned, the battle had already been won. That is why they could rejoice, singing, “GIVE THANKS!”

Let me encourage you with this: When you are facing a battle or something that seems impossible, go to that secret place with the Lord. Seek Him, worship Him, and wait for Him to speak. Let His promises and the words that He speaks be your confidence and your song in the midst of battle.

Prayer

Dear Lord,

We thank You for the promise in Your word that You will never leave us or forsake us. We thank You that You will always speak to us bringing comfort and strategy. We pray that as You seek Your face in the quiet place that You will reveal Your strategies for breakthrough and dominion. We thank You for the victory that comes with Your word. In Jesus’ name.

Amen.
