Expensive and Unnecessary Climate Malarkey
Although man-made climate change is an unproven theory, here in Australia, we are forced to pay a very steep price for an extremely dubious idea to help alleviate the so-called “Climate Crisis” through the elimination of fossil fuels.
Our lefty, progressive climate czars have succeeded in forcing us to make many meaningless sacrifices to their god. Banning clean natural gas hookups in many cities and suburbs, ridiculous and non-achievable vehicle emission standards, and even the absurdity of no more black roofs in massive areas such as New South Wales!
Even if all their pie-in-the-sky proposals are implemented, we know it will make no meaningful difference whatsoever in curbing global warming — or cooling, for that matter — whichever slogan happens to be in vogue.
The man-made hypothesis nonetheless merits further rigorous scientific scrutiny, not hysterical, manipulative, disingenuous and hypocritical political manoeuvring and grandstanding. Instead of mature scientific discourse, we get fear-mongering, massive profiteering and deeply unscientific activism from our wealthy and insular global elites who are comfortably ensconced in their gated communities and their temperature-regulated, electronically adjusted, climate-controlled offices.
How many zeroes must be added to the dollar sign before the cripplingly expensive net zero nonsense is achieved? In today’s consumer-driven world, China, India, and Russia have no intention whatsoever of adhering to any restrictions in their economically driven quest to out-produce the rest of us, but let us not curb the global infatuation by our ruling elites to flit relentlessly across the globe in order to save it.
The Posturing of the Global Elites
Last November, 80,000 people gathered at the anti-fossil fuel Climate Conference in Dubai. Just recently the “Second Nature Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit” was in California; the “Climate and Clean Air Conference” was in Kenya; another must-attend global climate gabfest, the “International Financial Reporting Center Sustainability Conference” was held in New York; The Aspen Ideas Institute’s climate conference was in Miami Beach, not in chilly Aspen; the “European Conference on Renewable Energy” also held its conference in Florida; the “World Impact Summit” in France will be attended by thousands of climate activists and others will attend the “Climate Change World Impact Summit” in Colombia.
The “8th International Conference on Climate Change” will be in April in France (April in Paris anyone?); “The World Conference on Climate Change and Global Warming” will be in Madrid; the “Fourth International Conference on Climate Change and Sustainability” is in Paris (where else?) in July along with the “Conference on Global Climate Change and Sustainable Development” due in London; the “World Conference on Climate Change and Sustainability is in Barcelona this Oct along with the “Global Summit on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability” in Rome with hundreds of similar conferences scheduled attracting thousands and thousands of attendees. At what cost?
Not surprisingly, not one of these is a virtual conference. Not one is a Zoom call. No one will be at their boring desk in their climate-controlled office. Exotic, international air travel is so essential for those who are so desperate to “save the planet” that Obama’s Climate Czar John Kerry (Mr Ketchup himself) was forced to use his private jet instead of one of the dozens of regularly scheduled flights from the east coast of the US to the Reykjavik Climate Summit. Hundreds of thousands of such elite, mostly taxpayer-subsidised climate activists will attend these events, which are held in five-star luxury hotels in glamorous cities.
There are summits, conferences, seminars and meetings scheduled in almost every nation on earth every month from now until the end of time, which as the climate alarmists continually tell us, thanks to fossil fuels, is pretty close, but not so close as to prevent them from achieving Platinum status as frequent flyers on their favourite airline!
In his book God in the Dock, C.S. Lewis (Lewis’ stepson Doug Gresham is Godfather to my oldest granddaughter) warned,
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under the robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
Lewis goes on to assert that they think they are more likely to go to Heaven, yet are perfectly happy to make life Hell for the rest of us here on Earth.
Will there ever be an “International Climate Conference” in Juba, South Sudan or Haiti? Don’t hold your breath, as the saying goes. The hotels are substandard, the climate is too cold or too hot, and the wine is terrible.
