CitizenGO Petitions Health Minister to Suspend Childhood Gender Therapies
CitizenGO Australia is calling on Federal Health Minister Mark Butler to suspend all gender transition procedures and therapies for children, following alarming findings from the recent Cass Review in the United Kingdom, released earlier this year.
The petition, launched in June, has quickly amassed over 10,000 signatures, and urges immediate government action to protect children from unproven and potentially harmful medical practices.
This petition can be accessed directly here.
This follows a similar petition by CitizenGO launched in December last year, which called on the Senate to initiate an inquiry into childhood gender therapies. That previous petition gained almost 12,500 signatures.
Alarming Findings
The Cass Review, led by Dr Hilary Cass OBE, former president of the UK’s Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, highlighted several critical issues within gender clinics, including:
- Lack of Evidence: Puberty blockers and hormone treatments for gender-confused youths lack substantial evidence of benefits, raising serious concerns about their safety and efficacy.
- Health Risks: These treatments can interfere with bone density and mental health, with no proven improvement in mental well-being. The potential for lifelong harm is significant.
- Informed Consent Issues: Children are being administered hormones without proper informed consent, as the evidence surrounding these treatments is unclear and often misleading.
- Premature Intervention: The review emphasises that children should be allowed to grow up before making irreversible decisions about their bodies.
- Need for Further Research: The Cass Review calls for serious, comprehensive research before any further treatments are administered to children.
Despite these findings, Australian gender clinics continue to operate under the same protocols.
Recent investigations revealed troubling practices, such as Newcastle’s Maple Leaf House failing to track critical information about the treatments administered, including the drugs given and the biological gender of the children.
CitizenGO national campaign director and former Member of Parliament George Christensen said that Australians are being “subjected to dangerous, unproven gender transition treatments” and that it was critical we act now to protect them.
Immediate Action Required
“The findings of the Cass Review underscore the urgent need for our government to suspend these harmful practices immediately,” Mr Christensen said.
“We cannot allow Australian children to be used as guinea pigs in a medical experiment that lacks solid evidence of benefits and poses significant health risks.”
The petition calls for:
- Immediate Suspension: Suspend all gender transition procedures and therapies for children in Australia until comprehensive, evidence-based guidelines are developed and implemented.
- Independent Review: Commission an independent review of all gender clinics in Australia to ensure they operate under rigorous, scientifically sound protocols.
- Enhanced Oversight: Implement stringent oversight and data tracking measures to ensure that all treatments are administered safely and ethically.
“The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, as every moment we wait, more children are subjected to irreversible harm,” Mr Christensen said.
“Our politicians need to understand that the public is aware of these dangers and demands action.
“By suspending these treatments, we can protect our children from lifelong harm and ensure a safer future for all.”
CitizenGO Australia urges concerned citizens to sign the petition and join the call for immediate action to suspend all harmful gender transition therapies for children.
