Tom MacDonald is a Canadian rapper, singer-songwriter, and record producer. According to Wikipedia (illustrating why you shouldn’t believe everything you read), MacDonald is “known for his right-wing lyrics and fanbase. His music has been characterised as ‘MAGA rap’, a Trumpist subgenre of political hip-hop.”

Who knew “MAGA rap” was a thing; and I’m pretty sure Wikipedia’s “Trumpist subgenre” description is not meant as a compliment.

Despite being Canadian, there’s no questioning MacDonald’s passionate American patriotism. Tracks such as In God We Trust and Can’t Cancel All of Us illustrate this powerfully, yet he doesn’t take himself too seriously. MacDonald unapologetically encapsulates American exceptionalism, and you can find out more of his story here. MAGA rap, indeed.

It’s certainly rare to find someone who drops truth bombs to phat beats as deftly as MacDonald. Along with his partner, rapper, singer, songwriter, and music video director Nova Rockafeller, they’re certainly on the cutting edge when it comes to culture. With over forty Number 1’s on Billboard, MacDonald and Rockafeller must be doing something right.

In late February 2025, MacDonald released Man in the Sky, a poignant, country-tinged ballad accompanied by a farm animal-themed music video. His poetic lyrics have a child-like innocence, yet pose some of life’s biggest questions. They probably ruffle a few feathers, too:

Man in the Sky
by Tom MacDonald

There’s a man on TV, at a desk in a suit
He lies through his teeth, and they still call it the news
There’s a man in a white coat, whose medicine kills
He loves when you’re sick, ’cause you pay for his pills

There’s a man at the bank, who will give you a loan
So, that you’ll buy a house, and then he’ll take your home
There’s a man who wants you spending your life online
‘Cause you’re searching for truth, but controls what you find

We’ll be fine babe, if we don’t make it through
There’s a man, in a church, who I really hope told me the truth

Said there’s a man in the sky, watching over me and you
It don’t help if you can fly, He’s way past the moon
And there’s men here on the ground, that just wanna burn it down
They want money, they want power, don’t want no one else allowed
We’ll be fine babe, I’ll be the man for you

There’s a man in the courts, sworn to uphold the law
But he’s crooked as a fence post, and don’t do his job
There’s a man in a classroom, who should know the facts
But he’s brainwashin’ kids, teaching English and Math

There’s a man in your phone, who hears everything you say
He knows everywhere you go, every joke you ever made
There’s a man with a bloodline, that owns the whole world
Every airplane, and building, and gold brick, and pearl

We’ll be fine babe, if we don’t make it through (ooh, ooh)
There’s a man, in a church, who I really hope told me the truth

Said there’s a man in the sky, watching over me and you
It don’t help if you can fly, He’s way past the moon
And there’s men here on the ground, that just wanna burn it down
They want money, they want power, don’t want no one else allowed
We’ll be fine babe, I’ll be the man for you

Pray that the man in the sky’s watching over us tonight
‘Cause there’s people looking down on us for fighting for what’s right
Hold the line babe, and I’ll hold on to you
There’s a man in the clouds, and I hope He’s looking down
‘Cause there’s people here on Earth who tryna put us in the ground
We’ll be fine babe, I won’t let go of you

Said there’s a man in the sky, watching over me and you
It don’t help if you can fly, He’s way past the moon
And there’s men here on the ground, that just wanna burn it down
They want money, they want power, don’t want no one else allowed
We’ll be fine babe, I’ll be the man for you

During next weekend’s Easter Holiday, Christians remember and celebrate the Man in the Sky coming to Earth two thousand years ago in the form of flesh and blood. The life and message of this man, Jesus Christ, the Son of God and greatest man to ever walk the face of the Earth, is summed up beautifully in a well-known Bible verse:

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
~ John 3:16 (ESV)

In the lead-up to Easter, watch or listen to Man in the Sky. If you haven’t already, take the time to ask some questions of your own. For us dads, the Man in the Sky, Father God, is the ultimate example to follow.

Lovework

If you don’t already know Father God, seek Him this Easter. If you can, consider taking your family to a local Church this Easter. Most Bible-believing churches hold services across the Easter weekend, especially on Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday. If you’re not sure where to start, please reach out to Dads4Kids here. Our prayer is that you know the truth, and that the truth makes you free.

Yours faithfully,
Nathaniel Marsh

P.S. The team at Angel Studios has released another cracking film, The King of Kings, just in time for Easter. From what I’ve seen, the film looks fantastic, is family-friendly, and should be in cinemas across Australia over the Easter weekend. If you can, take your kids along to a screening.
