Shining Brighter in a Darkening Australia: Day 6
Intention
To answer Jesus’ summons to burn brighter and shine the light of hope, truth, and love in a darkening world.
Scripture
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
– Matthew 5:14–16
“The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.”
– Matthew 4:16
Reflection
As the Australian Labor Party takes the reins for another three years, my emotions are a mix of disappointment and anticipation.
The political landscape, especially here in Victoria, has left a bitter taste in many mouths.
The long lockdowns, police violence against peaceful protestors, and the stripping away of freedoms have shaken the very foundation of our society.
Many lost loved ones without the chance to mourn properly. The mental toll of prolonged isolation is still lingering.
But beyond these concerns, the deeper issue lies in the worldview that drives these policies.
The Labor Party is joined by other parties and politicians in their pro-euthanasia and pro-abortion stance. This reflects a disregard for the sanctity of life – an issue that strikes at the heart of what it means to be made in the image of God.
Their continued curtailment of religious freedoms, particularly for biblical Christians, reveals a growing intolerance for truth rooted in Scripture.
What, then, is there to be excited about?
Governments, no matter their ideology, will never be able to address the deep issues of the human soul.
Regardless of which party wins, Jesus is the only answer for our nation.
When the path of self-centeredness leads to emptiness, the cry is often, “I thought these things I voted for would fix my problems. But they did not.”
Many will realise, “They gave me welfare payments, but failed to give me an answer to my sin problem!”
Such things are like salt water to a parched soul. They may offer temporary relief, but never true healing.
When governments call good evil and evil good, many will ultimately feel unsatisfied and betrayed.
Those fed lies will begin to realise that they were tricked and will search out the truth. They will search for something real. They will search for truth, hope, and redemption.
What does all this mean? Australia’s mission field just became a little riper.
Jesus Christ is the light of the world, and He calls us to reflect that light in a dark world. As the nation gets darker, Christ in me becomes lighter.
I am excited because I am where I need to be.
We must not hide our light but let it shine before others, that they may see the truth in our actions and be drawn to the hope that is found in Christ alone.
While political decisions may affect the way we live, they cannot touch the call on our lives to be ambassadors of hope, love, and truth. Whether we are doctors, teachers, parents, or workers in any field, we have a role to play in bringing the light of Christ into every sphere of life.
It is time for us, as Christians, to boldly live out our faith. Our nation has never needed us more than it does now.
This is our moment. The darkness is real, but the light of Christ is even more real.
Let us rise to the occasion and allow our good works to point to the glory of our Father in heaven.

Prayer
Lord, in the midst of uncertainty, help me to be a light that reflects Your truth and love. I pray for the courage to stand firm in my faith and shine brightly in the darkness around me. May my actions bring glory to You and draw others to the hope that is found only in Christ. Amen.

It’s time to rethink “exile theology”. Christians shouldn’t withdraw from culture and politics, but instead live as ambassadors of Christ — boldly proclaiming His Lordship in every area of life.
