The Gentle Teaching Mother: Mother’s Day Tribute
See the tidy house with the pretty homemade quilts
And the welcome sign that hangs upon the door
Hear the happy laughing and the tramp of tiny feet
As the children play and romp around the floor.
Hear the sound of music and a psalm so sweetly sung
Let the pleasant peace of home upon you fall
See them settle quietly and their lessons all begun
There’s a gentle teaching mother there, that’s all.
See the girl move quietly and take the mic to do her part.
Hear the depth with which she understands
As she speaks the word of God, now written on her heart
And each good hearer savours all he can.
Mark the manly bearing of a healthy-hearted boy
As he bravely stands and shares his project well
Mark the young man’s freshness, let his honesty bring you joy
There’s a gentle, teaching mother there, as well.
Wonder how the little one, his insects all collected
Could explain their every detail to us all
Curious how many hours they spent as they inspected
And looked up books, and talked; them to recall
We are somewhat overwhelmed by enthusiastic chatter
And the curious attentive little minds
The inventions, the creations and such intent in every matter
Marvel as you hear of all their finds.
And once again on bended knee, mother is explaining
With patience to a cross and tearful child
And once again as chore time comes you hear no-one complaining
And at the value of her teaching then, she smiles
See the siblings cuddle as they share a well-loved book
And the history they are reading is alive
See them welcome baby as he says “I wanna look”
And the couch now holds them all; they number five.
There’s a quiet, grateful mother and she sings and works today
Tho’ her tasks are ne’er complete, she tires not
But she lifts her weary body one more time so late at night
And rocks the waking baby in his cot
And the big ones help the littlies and their hair is neatly combed
And they’re ready now for Sunday nearly dressed
And the Gentle Teaching mother is content and looks around
She loves her babes and knows how well she’s blessed.
