As military strikes ripple across Iran and the broader Middle East, many Christians around the world are watching in grief, confusion and prayer. The pace of events has been rapid, and with communication lines inside Iran frequently disrupted, even basic information can be difficult to confirm.

A Nation Shaken

On Saturday, 28 February, the United States and Israel carried out a series of coordinated strikes that resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s long‑standing Supreme Leader, along with several senior officials. Iranian state television announced his death while broadcasting archival footage draped with mourning graphics. The government immediately declared 40 days of national mourning.

The reaction inside Iran was mixed. While government channels conveyed solemnity, videos circulating on social media showed many citizens celebrating in the streets. Iranian expatriates in cities around the world also gathered publicly, expressing relief and hope for change.

An Iranian Christian and Open Doors analyst reflected on the significance of this turning point:

“Khamenei’s death is a sober moment for Iran. Under his rule, believers experienced decades of surveillance, intimidation and imprisonment. This is not a moment for triumphalism, but a moment to pray for a different future—one marked by dignity, justice and freedom for every Iranian.”

Fear in the Midst of Ongoing Strikes

Despite the change in leadership, military strikes have not subsided. One Christian woman living near Tehran managed to send a message to ministry partners shortly before nationwide internet shutdowns:

“The explosions shake the whole house. The jets are deafening. But I believe God will rescue me. I trust Him.”

Residents in several cities have begun taping their windows to reduce the danger from shattering glass as explosions continue nearby.

The violence has also spilled into neighbouring countries. In Erbil, northern Iraq, believers reported strong blasts and overhead jets as Iranian forces attempted to strike the American consulate early Monday morning. Air‑defence systems intercepted the drones before they hit their targets.

“We heard at least five rockets. The jets haven’t stopped circling,” an Open Doors contact in Erbil explained. “Everyone fears what Iran‑backed militias might attempt next.”

Further attacks have been recorded across the Arabian Peninsula, including in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Oman—mainly targeting U.S. installations, Israeli diplomatic sites and shipping lanes. One Christian in the Gulf region wrote:

“Missiles and sirens close to home… windows rattling… we’re heading to the shelter. Please pray.”

Even where defence systems intercepted the majority of missiles, some projectiles still caused fires, structural damage and widespread fear.

A Regional Crisis

The conflict has touched nearly every part of the Middle East.

• Lebanon: Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel; Israel retaliated with strikes in Beirut and other locations.
• Syria: Debris from an Iranian missile reportedly struck a residential building in Suwayda, killing five civilians. Air traffic authorities halted all flights.
• Jordan: Iran targeted a U.S. base, and falling debris prompted further fears.
• Israel & Palestinian Territories: Many residents have been forced into shelters once again. Christians in the West Bank say the renewed instability is devastating local tourism, which many families rely on for income.

One believer from the West Bank shared:

“People are exhausted. Tourism had started returning after the Gaza war, and now everything stops again. Pray for leaders to put aside their own interests and seek peace.”

No one knows how long this new phase of conflict will continue. U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated the operation could continue for several weeks or longer. Iran has yet to announce who will replace Khamenei.

Hope in the Midst of Uncertainty

Despite fear and instability, Iranian Christians emphasise that God has not abandoned His people.

“The Iranian church has suffered, but it has never lost its hope,” one analyst said. “Believers have stayed faithful, prayerful and resilient.”

Iranian Christian refugees who fled persecution now find themselves praying for a moment that once seemed impossible:

“We dream of returning home one day,” one said. “We long for an Iran where we can live our faith freely. May God protect the Middle East and bring lasting peace.”

As the region groans under the weight of war, Christians everywhere are invited to intercede.

• Pray especially for mothers nearing delivery who face reduced access to hospitals and extreme stress.

3. For Children Under Bombardment

• Lift up children terrified by explosions and chaos.
• Pray for emotional protection and God’s comforting presence.

4. For Families Facing Economic Crisis

• Pray for provision, employment and daily bread for households already stretched to the limit.
• Ask God to give leaders wisdom for stabilising policies.

5. For the Church in Iran

• Pray for safety, courage, unity and spiritual strength.
• Ask that believers would shine as beacons of hope.

6. For Protection Across the Middle East

• Pray for civilians in every affected nation.
• Ask for an end to violence and the preservation of innocent life.

7. For Iran’s Future

• Pray for justice, genuine freedom and unity during this leadership vacuum.
