Anthony Fauci’s newly released pandemic diary shows a man consumed with his own fame — and privately convinced of the very “conspiracy theories” he was scoffing at in public.
US Senator Rand Paul this week released 1,141 pages of Anthony Fauci’s personal COVID-era diary, recovered from Fauci’s own government computer records under new leadership at the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The document dump caught Fauci off guard, landing just days before his subpoenaed hearing before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, scheduled for Wednesday local time.
What Fauci’s diary reveals is hardly news to readers of the Daily Declaration. Whether on COVID’s origins, fatality rates, injection failures or lockdowns, we made the very same arguments years ago that Fauci long conceded in secret — and were roundly mocked for it by members of the Australian public.
In all, it’s a good week to be a “conspiracy theorist”.
Now, to that diary…
1. While Americans buried their dead, Fauci’s diary tracked his own celebrity.
In May 2020, as US deaths climbed past 90,000, Fauci wrote that his fame was “explosive and really unimaginable,” adding, “It is not hyoperbole to say that today I am the most famous and talked about person in the country and one of the most recognizable [persons] in the world.”
He noted Secret Service agents waved him through checkpoints without ID, and that Trump “seems to be enamored of me even though I am taking the spotlight away from him.” Three days later, he recorded that the White House was “very upset” that the press was making him look like a star who outshone the President.
From very early, The Daily Declaration challenged the unquestioning trust placed in figures like Fauci.
2. Fauci knew the lab-leak theory was credible from the earliest weeks — while telling the public the opposite.
On 26 January 2020, Fauci wrote that the Wuhan market “was not the source, it was the amplifier” of the outbreak.
Five days later, he recorded that a team of virologists had told him on a call they believed the mutations around the spike protein’s furin cleavage site “could not have occurred naturally,” and that the virus “could have been deliberately inserted and either accidentally released or deliberately released by a crazy person in the lab.”
Within weeks, Fauci was telling the public the opposite, and publicly dismissing the lab leak as a conspiracy theory.
The Daily Declaration made this very case in March 2023 — that Fauci manufactured a false consensus to bury the lab-leak theory — over two years before his diary confirmed it.
3. Fauci privately estimated COVID’s fatality rate at a tenth of what he later told the public.
On 8 February 2020, Fauci wrote that after discussing the outbreak with a high-profile colleague, “we are on the same page in thinking [that] this is acting like a bad influenza in its transmissibility and that the denominator is much greater than [the confirmed case count], making the case fatality rate (CFR) more like 0.2-0.3% rather than 2.0%.”
Over the following weeks, he had told the media and Congress that the virus was “10x more lethal than the seasonal flu” — many times higher than what he’d expressed privately.
The Daily Declaration was challenging official mortality figures as early as January 2022, long before the diary confirmed how low Fauci’s own estimates really were.
4. Fauci privately coordinated with the CNN anchor who would interview him.
In his diary, Fauci described a dinner at Jake Tapper’s home as “friendship building,” and recorded a phone call in which “Jake wanted to make sure the interview did not cause me any problems.”
This is a form of backchanneling — a source and a journalist coordinating privately, off-air, to manage how a story is framed — the opposite of the arm’s-length relationship the public assumes exists between a network anchor and the officials he supposedly holds to account.
From January 2022 onwards, The Daily Declaration expressed concern that the press had stopped scrutinising the COVID officials it was meant to hold to account.
5. Fauci knew injected people could still catch and spread COVID at rates similar to the uninjected.
In July 2021, Fauci recorded briefing the President that “the delta variant is causing breakthrough infections in vaccinated individuals” who “can transmit the virus to uninfected individuals,” and that viral loads in breakthrough cases were “similar to” those in the uninjected.
That November, after attending an injected-only event, he wrote that he lay awake “concerned about having gotten infected,” adding, “I’m well aware that many people who are vaccinated are still getting infected.”
He downplayed these concerns publicly and continued pushing the injections as essential until the day he retired.
The Daily Declaration made this same case in January 2022, long before Fauci’s diary confirmed he’d known it privately all along.
6. Fauci discovered a pulmonary blood clot months after his own injection.
In June 2021, he wrote that a CT scan ordered after chest pain found a lesion doctors initially feared was cancer, but which specialists concluded was more likely inflammatory. The same scan showed “a pulmonary infarct in the right lowest segment that was definite,” and he began “anticoagulation immediately with Eliquis.”
As RFK Jr. and others have highlighted, this is a condition health agencies themselves listed as an expected injection side effect. Fauci was treated privately by top American doctors and never disclosed his injury — all while downplaying clotting events as a genuine injection risk.
The Daily Declaration began reporting on COVID injection injury cases and regulatory silence from December 2022.
7. Fauci privately claimed credit for pushing New York and California into lockdown but denied it on air.
Fauci wrote that he “convinced” Bill de Blasio to close New York City’s schools, bars, and restaurants “based on what I was saying publicly,” and that Gavin Newsom’s chief of staff told him California would do the same “based on my TV appearances today and yesterday.”
What he said in public was a different story. In 2022, he told ABC News, “They always say ‘Fauci was responsible for closing schools.’ I had nothing to do… I mean, let’s get down to the facts.” The following year, he told the New York Times, “Show me a school that I shut down and show me a factory that I shut down. Never. I never did.”
The Daily Declaration continually questioned the proportionality of the lockdowns Fauci promoted.
And to think that we were the ones being censored for misinformation!
