The Tragedy and Trauma of Abortion

Day 7: The Tragedy and Trauma of Abortion

16 August 2026

3.7 MINS

Intention

To be compelled by God’s love to persevere in fervent prayer and action for the unborn.

Scripture

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

– John 15:13

Reflection

In every generation there is an opportunity to follow the Lord Jesus’ example as he taught in John 15:13. He demonstrated the greatest love of all time, and we are the beneficiaries of this great love.

We regularly remember the sacrificial love Australians demonstrated in war times, laying down their lives for others. John 15:13 is often cited during these remembrances.

Currently we live in a culture where abortion legally destroys the lives of 90,000 Australians each year.

There is no doubt that abortion and the deception surrounding this so-called ‘health care’ for women represents something both complex and traumatic. Viable babies who suffered an attempted abortion by receiving a lethal injection of the extremely painful potassium chloride into their tiny bodies are sometimes born alive. They too are precious lives created in the image of God. These little ones are among the most helpless and vulnerable Australians.

Tragically we now witness the unthinkable — too many men and women in our parliaments taking the position to leave these tiny Australians defenceless. As Isaiah 59:15 records, “Truth is missing” from the public square. The verse continues, “The Lord saw that there was no justice, and he was offended.”

Many seem to think it is easy to turn a blind eye and not believe that babies left to die after a failed abortion is a human rights issue. Too many parliamentarians allow bills designed to safeguard babies to fade away without priority, without discussion, without a second glance — yet if passed, they would provide assistance to these vulnerable babies.

It’s time to be bold and courageous, to persevere in prayer, fasting, and action, and to let our politicians know we will not give up. Love compels us to persevere.

Thank God that we still have many righteous people in our nation who will not sit back and turn a blind eye to this atrocity. We remember Senator George Christensen who presented The Human Rights (Children Born Alive Protection) Bill 2021. Then Senators Matt Canavan, Alex Antic, and Ralph Babet who presented The Human Rights (Children Born Alive Protection) Bill 2022.

Now this year Federal Member Llew O’Brien is presenting the Human Rights (Children Born Alive Protection) Bill 2026.

We thank God for these courageous ones who, at a high cost to themselves, have persisted in bringing this issue into the public square of our Federal Parliament. All Australians must be treated with dignity and given the utmost care with every assistance to live a full life.

May we, Christ’s Church, rise up as one, with one heart and mind in prayer and action, to overcome the flood of legalised abortion, and to have proper medical care given to those born alive after a failed abortion, like every cherished baby.

I encourage you to watch a midwife’s testimony of a baby being born alive after an abortion:

Prayer

Gracious and loving Heavenly Father,

We love because you first loved us — thank you. Praise you, Jesus, that you willingly laid down your sinless life for the rescue of all humanity.

Lord, have mercy on our nation again today. We pray, Father, forgive all those who are blinded to the tragedy of abortion including those that allow aborted babies to die without care.

Lord, grant your people persistent faith like the widow in Jesus’s parable concerning the unjust judge (Luke 18). We believe that the babies will get justice because you, Lord, will bring it about. Shift the federal politicians’ hearts and give grace to help this bill get traction and be successful this time. Strengthen the resolve for your people to face this issue. May we be compelled by love to use our unique abilities to be your solution in our nation.

Lord, we ask you to soften hardened hearts or remove those persons from positions of power. Destroy the culture of death in Australia so that the 90,000 vulnerable babies aborted each year may live. Move heaven and earth for the abundant life you came to give every precious child, so that they might fulfil their purpose and the plans you have for them. Awaken your Church to follow your example and sacrifice, and do whatever is needed to protect every tiny human life.

In your perfect and precious name, Jesus. Amen.
