The Power of Being Yourself: Embracing Authenticity in a Phoney World
by Col Stringer
The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:10, “But by the grace of God, I am what I am…”
I love this passage from Paul. It has actually helped me when I have come under criticism and condemnation as: being “too ocker“, “not sophisticated enough”; once, while speaking in the USA, I was told to “lose my accent”, and I know for a fact some churches won’t have me speak because I’m too “politically incorrect”. LOL. I’ve even been ridiculed for my nickname “Pastor Crocodile Dundee” — which, incidentally, I never made up myself!
Understand me now: I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m happy to just be myself, but it does sadden me when some in the church encourage us to be phony, or copy someone else to be more accepted. Although they may not put it as bluntly as that!
I live on the Gold Coast, which is known for its fake appearances and social conformity. Here, plastic bums, boobs and facelifts are accepted as the norm, but even while surrounded by such “fakeness”, the simple act of being yourself can feel sooooo liberating!
There’s immense value in embracing authenticity and shedding pretence. When you stay true to who you are — what the Lord has created you to be, life becomes more genuine, fulfilling, and meaningful.
Authenticity Builds Self-Acceptance
Firstly, simply being yourself fosters self-acceptance. Instead of beating yourself up trying to fit into someone else’s mould, you can focus on your God-given qualities, talents, and quirks. This self-awareness builds confidence and nurtures a positive self-image.
People are naturally drawn to authenticity; when you’re genuine, you attract relationships based on trust and mutual respect. Most Aussies, maybe more outside the church, relate to people who are “fair dinkum” or “true blue”!
Moreover, remaining true to yourself simplifies life. Pretending to be someone you’re not is mentally and emotionally draining. It leads to stress, anxiety, and feelings of disconnection. When you embrace your true self, you free yourself from these burdens, allowing for greater mental stability and peace.
You also create space for personal growth because you recognise and work on your real God-given strengths and weaknesses — not someone else’s idea of what you need to do to become more “accepted”.
My advice to the younger generation is — be yourself! And encourage others to do the same — and believe me, that is so sadly lacking and desperately needed in the world (and the church) today!
Just being your true, authentic self sets a powerful example and promotes a culture of honesty and vulnerability. In turn, this can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections — both personally and professionally.
Living Authentically Leads to Purpose
Finally, living authentically contributes to happiness. When your actions align with your values, passions, and beliefs, life feels more purposeful. It’s about honouring who the Lord has made you — you are a unique individual — there’s no one else just like you — so why hide it?
In essence, the value of just being yourself cannot be overstated. It’s the foundation for genuine happiness, healthy relationships, and a fulfilling life. So, let’s dump the phoney nonsense and pretence — embrace your true self, and watch the Lord use your uniqueness to transform the world for the better. Let’s follow the example of the great Apostle Paul, who wrote: “I am what I am by the Grace of God.”
I call you blessed, in Jesus’ name.

Thanks Ps Crok!
I smile remembering when you preached a “hard thing”, that your authentic response was “I can feel the love coming my way”.
Authentic!
Church can be the hardest place to be yourself. Somehow all the “shoulds” come out of the woodwork as people try to mould others into their own image instead of accepting the wonderful uniqueness of one another for God’s time, place & Purpose.
