A Minneapolis priest’s emotional response during Communion has captivated viewers worldwide, prompting a personal explanation of his spiritual experience and calls for theological discernment.

School Mass at Saint Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Hopkins, Minnesota, went viral last week.

In the live-streamed Mass, Catholic priest and Chesterton Academy school chaplain Father Brent Bowman appeared to be gripped by the gravitas of Communion.

Midway through the liturgy, Bowman began to weep and tremble.

As he struggled to continue, Bowman appeared to be stopped both visibly and audibly by the reverence of it all.

In the video, while quoting the Eucharistic Prayer, Bowman seemed to pause after bowing slightly.

Reciting the consecration liturgy, Bowman could be seen holding back tears, as he said, “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of My blood.”

He then slowly moved forward, adding, “of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

After quoting Christ’s “do this in memory of Me,” Bowman, clearly moved by the moment, began to cry.

Holding the cup with one quivering hand, he bowed over it. While frequently pausing, he raised the cup and slowly pushed through the emotion to complete the liturgy.

Father Bowman Explains His Spiritual Experience

In a statement published online two days later, Bowman, who became Chesterton’s chaplain in 2024, wrote,

“On Monday, September 14, I celebrated the Holy Mass for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Hopkins, MN.

“During the Mass, I had a private spiritual experience while praying the Eucharistic prayer over the bread and wine.

“I want to humbly share and clarify what I experienced, all for God’s glory and praise.”

Correcting any misinformation about the video of the Mass being shared online, Bowman stated,

“To clarify up front, my experience was NOT what the Catholic Church considers a ‘Eucharistic miracle.’”

“The forms of bread and wine,” he asserted, “retained their accidents (i.e., their appearance and taste) during this entire experience. Never did I see real blood or human flesh with my eyes.”

Bowman described being given what he believed was “internal knowledge of the power of [the consecration prayer over the wine] being spoken.”

“To the point,” he explained, “that I had difficulty speaking.”

Recounting that moment, Bowman shared,

“With each word, I became more physically overwhelmed as seen in the video.

“At the same time, I was given sensory knowledge of the weight of God’s power coming down upon the altar, and I felt the heaviness of Jesus’s substantial presence in the chalice in my hands.

“The chalice became too heavy to hold as I felt it pulled down to rest upon the altar.”

Hands fixed to the cup, he said, “I could not physically move it.”

To this, Bowman added,

“Attempting to elevate the Precious Blood, which I was not able to do for a period of time, I believe I was given grace to understand more deeply the bittersweetness of Our Lord’s Passion and how much blood Christ shed for the immense weight of all our sins.

“I believe I experienced this weight in the chalice.

“This spiritual experience emotionally and physically overwhelmed me, as evidenced in the Mass recording.”

Priests Urge Discernment While Pointing to God’s Glory

Advising that private encounters with God like this are a “completely unmerited gift and signs of God’s love for His people,” Bowman urged people not to idolise him or the moment.

“They are not necessarily signs of any person’s holiness,” he said.

Parish Priest Father Paul Haverstock backed this on 15 September with his own theological caveats, saying,

“All supernatural experiences that God might give us lead to love of God and neighbour, or they are not valid experiences, or we at least are not receiving their fruit.”

Fr Haverstock was clear that he agreed Fr Bowman encountered something deeply moving and personal, stating that his caution was in no way a rebuke.

Providing context in a separate video, Bowman’s former colleague, Saint Rose pastor Father Marc Paveglio commented on what is being viewed as a holy moment, saying,

“I know him as a friend and a brother. He spent four years at St. Rose.

“He’s a man who doesn’t want attention himself. He wants to glorify God and live for the Kingdom.”
