‘The Making of Angus Buchan’ Just Landed on Angel: Here’s How to Watch It
Angus Buchan’s remarkable journey from farmer to evangelist is brought to life in a new documentary now streaming, revealing the faith, family and challenges behind his public ministry.
The Making of Angus Buchan has entered the streaming circuit.
Angel Studios unleashed the powerful 2024 documentary about the 79-year-old South African ‘Faith Like Potatoes’ farmer-evangelist on 30 September.
Although still somewhat limited in South Africa, the film is available to Angel’s Australian and New Zealand paid subscribers.
Content is added or rejected by Angel’s test viewers, known as the Angel Guild, so not every film makes the cut.
The significance of this wasn’t lost on the film’s creators, Downtown Entertainment (DE), either.
When announcing the addition on social media, they said this was “the part that gives us chills.”
Marketing the release, DE explained, “To get greenlit on Angel, a series has to go in front of the Angel Guild, around 3,000 test viewers, mostly in the US, most of whom had never even heard of Angus Buchan before.
“They watched. They voted. And 70 to 75% across the series said: yes, we want this on Angel.
“That’s not us telling you this story matters. That’s thousands of strangers telling us.”
Behind the Man Millions Have Come to Know
The film is independent of Buchan’s Shalom Ministries and contains exclusive testimony about his faith, work and life.
Promoting the documentary on Facebook in early 2025, DE stated, “Not many individuals have been privy to the more intimate aspects of Angus Buchan’s life. Until now.”
They then described the film as “revealing and beautifully shot.”
DE added that it contains never-before-seen footage of Angus’s closest friends and family.
This includes his beloved wife Jill, who speaks for the first time about living with and working alongside this dynamic, challenging, and endlessly loving personality.
The Making of Angus Buchan is a three-part series subtitled “Chosen”, “Carved” and “Crowning”. Each episode runs for approximately 30 minutes.
More than a memoir, the documentary is a close look at conversion, the call to ministry, and the challenges of being in the public eye.
“Uncle Angus” is still working. With nearly 1.2 million followers across five major social media platforms, his daily Thought for Today devotional appears in text, Reel, audio and vlog formats. (See here, here, here and here.)

An app also exists, which hosts a separate weekly programme published every Friday called The Revival Train.
Buchan’s free app gives access to the NIV, hosts a kids’ corner, the devotional and a range of ministry material, including the audiobooks of Faith Like Potatoes and The Booth.
From Steam Train Vision to Virtual Gospel Mission
The idea for The Revival Train goes back to 2019.
The vision started with an urge from God directing Buchan to physically take the Gospel to the people by steam train.
His initial idea was to travel the 2,000 km from Cape Town to Musina, situated on the SA border with Zimbabwe, hosting evangelistic events along the way.
COVID restrictions in part killed the concept, and he was advised against it for feasibility reasons.
That’s when the virtual mission Gospel train was born.
In a video posted online in 2020, Buchan said, “The Lord showed me it’s time for us to go to the people. The Revival is going to come through the Holy Spirit.
“The train is purely to give us the direction. I want you to imagine a steam engine coming up the line with black smoke belching, the hooter blowing; we will saturate South Africa with the Gospel.”
Buchan then closed the vlog with prayer.
Undeterred by COVID lockdowns stomping all over the steam train vision, he launched a virtual version on Good Friday 2021.
Instead of Cape Town to Musina, Buchan, who is also the founder of the Mighty Men event, took the Gospel train global.
Further commenting on the Angel release platforming their Buchan documentary on an international stage, Downtown Entertainment said, “We built this for families and for the doubters. Help us get it in front of them. Share this far and wide. Let’s fill the room.”
DE also called it “the true story behind the man you thought you knew.”
The same post said, “The Making of Angus Buchan pulls back the curtain on the quiet struggles, the early hardships, and the incredible family devotion that built a legacy.”
