Victoria’s major parties have both pledged $30 million to fund abortions, prompting fierce criticism from pro-life advocates who say taxpayers deserve better support for mothers and unborn children.
By now, you would have heard of one of the most demonic campaign pledges to have been made by a major political party. With just a few weeks to go to the Victorian state election, the Labor Party has announced that abortion in this state would now be free of charge if they win office — that is, fully paid for by all Victorian taxpayers.
The state will pay private and public providers for all costs when they do a medical or surgical abortion within the first 16 weeks. Health Minister Ingrid Stitt said that Labor will invest $30 million over four years to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for abortions in Victoria.
She made these remarks: “Women should never have to make a decision about their health or their right to choose based on cost. Abortion, of course, is an important part of our health system here in Victoria, and we want to make sure women can access abortion care when they make that decision free of cost.”
Um, killing innocent babies is not health care — it is death care. And forcing taxpayers to cough up their hard-earned dollars to pay for these is abhorrent. If someone wants to kill their own baby, let them pay for it themselves. Don’t force me and others to become complicit in this evil.
Uniparty
All this is horrific enough. But what makes it even more deplorable is that Liberal Party leader Jess Wilson first said there would be no changes to their abortion policy, and then turned around hours later and said that the Liberals would match the Labor plan. Useless!
And people wonder why political outsiders such as One Nation are on the ascendancy all throughout Australia. When you have both major parties just echoing each other on something as important as the killing of the unborn, then you know we do not have a genuine two-party system: we have a uniparty.
Of course, Victoria has long had some of the most liberalised abortion laws in the nation, and aspects of baby-killing already have been getting some taxpayer backing. But this just takes it to a whole new, barbaric level.
Baby killers
Also quite painful to behold: if you happened to watch any of the commentators on News24 (formerly Sky News) on this matter, you will have seen that basically every one of these so-called conservative hosts and guests had no problem with this. Sure, they all attacked Carroll for this cynical political ploy and wedge politics.
But none of them that I heard discussing this got to the heart of the issue. No one mentioned the elephant in the room: every abortion is the killing of an innocent baby. And now we all have to fully subsidise this, whether we like it or not.
Thankfully, some moral and mental clarity prevailed here, with some commentators and political parties roundly condemning all this. Consider a few such reactions:
Lyle Shelton, leader of Family First, wrote this in an email to supporters:
Yesterday, Labor promised $30 million to make abortion free in Victoria, up to 16 weeks. Within hours, the Liberals matched it. On abortion, Victoria’s two major parties now stand in exactly the same place. Moira Deeming stood somewhere else.
The same day, she wrote to women who are pregnant and afraid: “babies can bring healing and joy and purpose and strength to even the darkest of circumstances.” For years, Moira helped organise the March for the Babies. She has been a voice for life on the streets of Melbourne, and in Parliament. On 28 November, Western Metro voters decide whether that voice stays.
As Moira Deeming, Family First MP, said:
Today, upon hearing of Labor’s glib announcement to further fund and promote all abortions even up to 9 months, including ‘partial birth’ abortion — I felt strongly as a mother, a rape victim and Victorian Leader of Family First that I should remind everyone — especially those who’ve found out they’re pregnant and are feeling afraid- that babies can bring healing and joy and purpose and strength to even the darkest of circumstances. And that if you want to keep your baby but need some help, there are tens of thousands of us who will help you.
And to those who have already had abortions, our lives may or may not be very different, but please know all I feel toward you is compassion and from my perspective, I am so sorry and sad that you felt you needed to do that. And that if you need help to work through any grief from your abortion, there are tens of thousands of us who love you and know what you’re going through and want to help you too.
For the record — Family First don’t support sending women to jail for abortion. But we are pro-family, pro-life, pro supporting women through unplanned pregnancies, pro supporting anyone with post-abortion regret — and pro-babies in general!!
FamilyVoice issued a press release on this. It said in part:
FamilyVoice Australia Victorian State Director John Martin said the Government was playing politics rather than surveying the community for their thoughts, or considering the scientific realities of abortion.
“The Carroll Labor government is taking a page out of Queensland Labor’s book from the 2024 state election. It knows its days are numbered, so it is throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks, while wedging the Liberals into statements that will turn off their base and the new voters they need,” Mr Martin said.
“Labor doesn’t care about abortion access. That much is obvious, because this hasn’t been a live issue in Victorian politics for years. They are playing politics with the actual lives of babies, who have life from the moment of fertilisation, as science confirms.”
Mr Martin said the Opposition’s answer was no better. “The Liberal Party seem to have no honour either, clinging to the conservative mantra while promoting left wing causes. Christians in particular should think twice before voting Liberal if they are going to be as spineless as Labor.”
Rachael Wong, head of Women’s Forum Australia, said this: “Why is it that the only time Victorian Labor knows what a woman is, is when it suits their political agenda? Using ‘free’ abortions to score political points with women when its own policies have erased them, is gross and pathetic.”
She also tweeted:
And this is why many people are struggling to take the Libs seriously. It’s giving “pick-me” and “Labor-lite”. Instead of coming up with their own policies that would genuinely benefit women, Liberal Victoria has jumped on Labor’s $30 million taxpayer-funded abortion wagon. Will both parties also commit to making the same new investment into supporting women who want to keep their babies? Or is it cheaper and more politically expedient to simply fund more abortions?
Dr Joanna Howe wrote: “Federal Labor already pays women up to $22,000 for having a late-term abortion. Now they want to make full-term baby murder free in Victoria. Please URGENTLY sign the petition.”
The petition reads in part:
Labor announced that it will fund full-term abortions at the taxpayer’s expense if it wins the Victorian November elections and within 4 hours, the Liberals matched this promise. Not even cancer treatment or heart surgery are covered completely by the government in Australia. Visiting the GP usually slugs Australians with a $50 fee. Yet, Labor and the Liberals want to make abortion up to birth completely free.
Abortion is legal up to birth in Victoria. Section 5 of the Abortion Law Reform Act 2008 provides that abortion can be approved after 24 weeks with the approval of two doctors. In fact, there is no upper gestational limit in Victoria for abortion. It is legal through all 40 weeks of pregnancy. This leads to over 15,000 Victorian babies losing their life to abortion. Every. Single. Year.
Kurt Mahlburg of The Daily Declaration tweeted:
Killing the defenceless unborn is about as evil as it gets. Making the public pay for it is next level. Yet that’s just what the Victorian Premier, Ben Carroll, promised as an election pledge. Then the Liberal leader Jess Wilson fell over herself to match the bloodstained offer. I have a better idea. Victorians should abort the Labor government — and the state branch of the Liberal party while they’re at it.
And when one pro-abort claimed that One Nation had just turned abortion into an election issue, Kurt replied: “Amazing. Labor and the Liberals come out with a radical abortion policy in advance of the Victorian election. And yet it’s One Nation’s fault for starting a culture war!”
Stephanie Bastiaan of Women’s Forum Australia put it this way:
The rhetoric around abortion in Victoria has shifted from “my body, my choice” to “you will pay for my choice”. For Victorians who value the rights and dignity of unborn babies – and care about the physical and psychological risks it poses to mothers, it is a dark moment. Victoria is drowning in debt. Families are struggling to pay their bills. Women facing financial pressure are returning to work before they’re ready, placing their very young children in institutional childcare because staying home is no longer affordable. Yet both major parties have backed an eye-watering $30 million over four years to fund abortion. Where is the same determination to ease the financial pressures on families trying to raise their children? Where is the support for women who want to spend more time caring for their babies?
Dr Debbie Garratt responding to Health Minister Ingrid Stitt, who said, “A choice you can’t afford isn’t a choice.”: “So will it be free to continue your pregnancy and have your baby as well then?”
The sad truth is, Victoria is going to hell in a handbasket under Labor, and all Ben Carroll can do is make it even easier, quicker and cheaper to kill your own babies. Jess Wilson is no better. Two sides of the same coin. God have mercy on us all.
