The One Tweet That Captured My View of Politics, Trump and Jesus
Occasionally, I see something on social media that captures what I think about an important topic.
The tweet below is one of those items. It (briefly!) unpacks the Biblical relationship between politics, Christianity and Trump. Yes, there’s more that can be said — but it’s an excellent summary:
President Trump is no savior. He needs Jesus just as I do. He is a flawed and fallible man. But I pray that God works in him, and through him, for God’s glory.
Politics is not everything; it is far from the most consequential thing in this life. But neither is it inconsequential or unimportant. Much of our day-to-day existence is sorted in the political realm. This is why we should all–whatever one thinks of Trump–pray for our leaders, in order that we may lead a quiet life that is pleasing in God’s sight (1 Timothy 2:1-5). And we recall this as well: Christ Jesus is our true king. He is even now ruling his “holy nation” (1 Peter 2:9). He is not running for any race, and no one can ever unseat from his throne of glory. He is seated at the Father’s right hand, and he does all things well. Everything you see before you in the political realm–in America and beyond–is just a footnote to the kingship of Jesus. Pray for your current leader, but put your hope and trust in Christ and Christ alone.

Balance
While some Christian commentary errs on the side of Christians must not support Trump, on the one hand, or comes perilously close to viewing Trump as a pseudo-Messiah on the other, Strachan draws us back to what the Bible says about politics:

There is only one Messiah, and He doesn’t reside in the White House

Politics is not the most important thing in life. But that doesn’t mean it’s unimportant.

Christians must view politics through the lens of the Resurrected and Ruling Lord Jesus Christ, the Ultimate Ruler.
If we stick to the Bible’s view — summarised in the above tweet — we’ll avoid the twin pitfalls of triumphalism and despair. We’ll avoid losing our heads in the cut and thrust of worldly politics. Instead, we’ll be filled with hope and realism. We’ll put our ultimate hope in Jesus, who will never fail us. And we’ll be realistic about what politics can (and can’t) achieve.
That’s a perspective we need to hold to in today’s maddening world.

Politics certainly shows itself to be a dirty game, and many of us get consumed by our sometimes totally justifiable dislikes.
But that attitude isn’t the most helpful …
As usual, what Jesus said is worth hearing again :
Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave (servant) of all.
Also, Paul said this to Timothy :
I urge then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for EVERYONE – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness …
So yes President Trump and his administration need our supportive prayers – not because they are the ‘good guys’, but because they are accountable to our holy God who requires the leaders He installs, to be his guys.
So let’s pray for them, and keep on praying for them.
