COVID19 Call to Prayer – April 2: Deliver Us From Evil
Prayers: Matt. 6:9
“This, then, is how you should pray:
“ ‘Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your name,
Your Kingdom Come,
Your Will be Done,
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil…”
Or the Evil one. Either way, it does not matter – we are asking to be delivered from evil, whether personified in the Evil one, or the evil of suffering, illness and death caused by Covid-19. Whether you are a nurse seeking to prevent people dying, or a worker facing redundancy, or fearful of that cough and fever you have, we are all conscious that we are facing evil, and we just cry out for deliverance.
Petition: Please join with us in praying for:
- Brazil – the country in South America with the largest number of cases – 6,836 and 240 deaths. Brazil is one of the countries that has not adopted a strict lockdown policy. There are considerable concerns about the slum areas and those who do not have access to good healthcare.
- New South Wales – Now has 2,298 cases (up from just over 1,000 week ago). Although NSW has small pockets of community contagion, it is good to see that the rate of increase has dropped significantly in the past few days. May this continue.
- President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil is a professing Christian. May he be granted wisdom, courage and compassion as he seeks to lead his people through this crisis.
- Those who lead praise and worship in regular services – as they adapt to the new environment and learn to lead the Lord’s people in worship online.
A Prayer of Repentance:
Lord Jesus, give me a deeper repentance, a horror of sin, a dread of its approach;
Help me chastely to flee it, and jealousy to resolve that my heart may be Yours alone.
Give me a deeper trust, that I may lose myself to find myself in You,
the ground of my rest, the spring of my being. (Valley of Vision)
A Prayer of Thanksgiving:
Our Father, We rejoice that you have defeated evil and the Evil one.
No matter how great the Darkness, the Light breaks through.
We bless You that Evil shall not prevail, and ultimately You work even evil for good. Amen.

Today is the National Day of Prayer. The theme from Joshua 3:5 is to consecrate ourselves. And contained within the verse is a remarkable promise: “for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.”

Greater clarity and conviction about Jesus will lead to greater courage to share him — and for others to know him. There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

Hearing and receiving the word generate action. Together, by the grace of Christ, they open the way for his presence to break through — and for his word to touch others and produce lasting fruit. Only the received word becomes fruitful.

The responsibility for nurturing new believers does not rest with one or two designated church leaders or in any particular church structure. It rests with all of us.
