This is my seventh in the series, highlighting key aspects from each chapter of my new book, While We Were Sleeping: A Wake-up Call For All Christians (2025). (Check out my YouTube channel, where I am posting a reflection on each chapter, to complement this post.)

This chapter kicks off with Kirralie Smith’s story.

I am the national spokeswoman for Binary, an organisation that is dedicated to dealing with gender ideology, and all the negative aspects of it. We primarily focus on women’s sex-based rights, parental rights, and child safeguarding.

During the same sex-marriage debate I was never a formal part of the Marriage Alliance with their leader Lyle Shelton (Chapter 1), but I did use my platform with tens of thousands of followers here in Australia. I did several videos that got two million views, warning that if we redefine marriage it was going to lead to all sorts of problems, for example, that kids will be forced to submit to the updates in sex education that happens in schools.

We now have this incredible situation in Australia, where the law, the courts and the politicians have all agreed to this falsehood that people can change their sex. They can’t, there is no evidence for that. There are no facts to support this. So, a decade later, all these things have come together in a co-ordinated way, that we are now all reaping the consequences

For example, it’s just come out in Queensland, that 42 minors were put on puberty blockers and cross sex hormones without their parents’ knowledge or consent in the Cairns Gender Clinic. The media is now a bit more emboldened to report on these things. This has also emboldened more politicians and medical practitioners.

People like Dr Jillian Spencer and Dr Dylan Wilson are speaking out, they have the authority to do so because they work in this space. Professor Dianna Kenny, Professor John Whitehall, there are quite a few now, who have been speaking out and will continue to do so. I believe Dr Jillian and others got about 200 doctors to sign an open letter about their concerns about gender clinic practices in Australia.

The church has to get back to the truth. I hear, heartbreakingly, so many testimonies from people in churches saying their pastors won’t talk about it and all they say is that we have to ‘love’ these people. Some have allowed transgender identified men into their female toilets, they don’t challenge, they simply say we have to accept them.

But this does not set these people free. It doesn’t bring healing; it doesn’t bring wholeness. I would say to churches, come back, sit at the feet of Jesus, the truth is kind and loving. It’s not kind and loving to deceive people or to enter into their deception and not challenge them. As Christians we must challenge deception while still accepting the people. The father of lies hates us, he wants to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus wants to give us life and give it in abundance.

Kirralie’s Book – Devastated

Kirralie has edited a book, Devastated: How gender ideology is tearing Australian families apart (2024). This is not a book for the faint-hearted; indeed, Kirralie’s husband warned people not to read it before going to bed, as the stories are so harrowing that you won’t sleep!

These are firsthand accounts from nine families. For many, this book is the first time they have publicly told their stories. They share the heartbreak of losing their children to a harmful ideology, their feelings of powerlessness as their kids are groomed online, and the devastating impacts on their marriages and children.

British Activist – Helen Joyce

The gender clinics have been so overrun with demand, and blinded by their own ideology, so much that they have done no meaningful follow-up of their patients. They don’t know the regret rate of those they have treated. All de-transitioners are treated as apostates, as if this were a religion.

Yes, it is a religion, a godless, new religion that has believers, converts and now apostates. Helen Joyce, one-time British Editor at The Economist before she joined the gender-critical campaign group Sex Matters as a director, commented:

It’s the most disgusting thing I have seen from the medical profession to tell parents they must do the transition, or their child will kill themselves, when there is no supportive evidence whatever and in fact there is clear evidence that their ‘treatment’ has no effect on suicide rates.

Helen’s advice to parents who want to do the right thing by their troubled kids:

Do what you can to pre-empt it. That means being really clear with your child that sex change is not possible. That’s not you being mean; it’s simply describing the human condition, such as the fact that everybody dies. A boy who wants to be girlish can be and a girl who wants to do boy things can. These things are fine. This way you can inoculate your child before they ever hear it. Make sure you have strong relationships with your kids, very open relationships with your kids.

Christian Schools Accommodating Transgenderism

Most schools have at least one trans student, including Christian schools, so this issue can’t be ignored by any of us. We are called to love everyone and hate the sin, but that doesn’t mean we close our eyes to sin’s fruit. None of us is a mistake:

God created man in His own image;
in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:27)

It is understandable for some of those with no faith in God, to feel dissatisfied with the cards they have been dealt. But God knit us together in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13) and:

Will the thing formed say to Him who formed it, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honour and another for dishonour. (Romans 9:20-21)

The Ultimate Fruit of Homosexuality – Transgenderism

If we buy the lie that trans is written into the genes, we deny it’s a sin, we deny there can be deliverance, and we deny they can be forgiven, healed, and saved. Whatever our past or struggles, the Gospel offers cleansing, healing, and transformation through Christ, no exceptions.

We let this happen; we did not take a stand. Jesus said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me’ (Matthew 25:45). I believe that politicians and the legislature should be downstream from society. We have let politicians and the legislature become the driving force in society; they are now upstream of society, While We Were Sleeping.

Our individual actions could not have stopped this tsunami of transgenderism, but our collective inaction cleared the stage for the lie. So, foreshadowing my Chapter 13 Spiritual Warfare, I believe we need to confess our sin and the sin of our nation and call on God for the healing of our land (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Kirralie’s Stand

Kirralie vows to fight on as the court prepares to fine her for calling a male athlete a man. This staunch defender of free speech and biological truth faces massive fines and forced re-education for questioning men in women’s sports. Her battle highlights how laws and ideology are increasingly weaponised to silence dissent, redefine reality, and undermine parental rights.

In December, Rod Lampard reported that a New South Wales Local District Court fined Kirralie Smith $95,000 for so-called ‘misgendering’. The civil penalty includes a forced public apology for refusing to refer to a man as a woman. Smith shared some of the details on social media earlier, stating that the “fines will be $190,000 if not paid within 28 days.”

Defiant, the Australian Binary director said she would be appealing the decision:

It is disappointing that the word ‘woman’ has been redefined to include males.

We now have the “words ‘violence’ and ‘vilification’ being applied to speaking the truth about information in the public domain”.

A Call To Action

What’s our response? Do we admire Kirralie for her courage to take a stand? Do we feel sad for the victims of this diabolical ideology? Do we feel angry with our political system that has caved to this agenda in the name of diversity and inclusion?

Putting together While We Were Sleeping: A Wake-up Call For All Christians (2025), I have come face-to-face with giants of the faith who have inspired me to take a more solid stand than I have in the past. Will you join me?

Let’s consider a verse that we don’t like to ponder too often:

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Matthew 16:24)

These days, we are generally not called upon to carry our literal cross like Jesus. However, this verse still applies. My definition of our cross is something that will cost us our lives, for the sake of taking a stand with Jesus. If we deny Him, we are effectively preserving our life in the here and now. If we stand with Jesus by carrying our cross, we can say with Job, ‘though He slay me, yet will I trust Him’ (Job 13:15).
