Reflecting the Light: What Christians Look Like When We Represent Jesus

5.2 MINS

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

Jesus’ words are not a suggestion, but a call to action for every believer. When we represent Jesus, when His life is formed in us and expressed through us, we become light in a world that still walks in darkness.

Light in Scripture

The Hebrew word translated “light” is אור (ohr/ore: aleph vav resh (RTL), Strong’s H216). Its range of meaning in Scripture is rich and layered.

It refers to the light of day, the light of heavenly luminaries (moon, sun, and stars), daybreak and dawn, daylight itself, lightning, the light of a lamp, the light of life, the light of prosperity, the light of instruction, and even the light of the face in a figurative sense (i.e. countenance).

It speaks of Jehovah as Israel’s light, and ultimately of Yeshua (Jesus) as the light of the Ekklesia (Church). Every one of these shades of meaning finds its fulfillment in Christ and, through Him, in those who belong to Him.

Ancient Hebrew language note:

In Hebrew light is called ohr (אור), a word formed from three letters Aleph (א), Vav (ו), and Resh (ר).

The letter Aleph (א) is the “father” of the Aleph-Bet, whose original pictograph represents an ox, symbolising strength. Its numerical value is one, and it is a silent letter. Aleph, therefore, is preeminent in its order and alludes to the ineffable mysteries of the oneness of God.

The letter Vav (ו) originally looked like a hook or nail, and in Biblical Hebrew, it is used as connective prefix meaning “and”. Symbolically, Vav pictures a conduit or connection between heaven and earth.

The letter Resh (ר) represents the head, and by extension, intelligence, the mind, comprehension, uncovering, remembering, and revelation.

I’ll leave the interpretation of this information to the reader.

Jesus is the source. He declared, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life” (John 8:12). John opens his Gospel by telling us that in Him was life, and the life was the light of men (John 1:4). The true Light which gives light to every man was coming into the world (John 1:9).

When we walk with Him, that same light begins to shine through us. We do not generate the light; we reflect it. Like the moon that has no light of its own yet illuminates the night because it faces the sun, so we shine only as we keep our faces turned toward Jesus.

What, then, do we look like when we reflect Yeshua?

There are several manifestations of how we reflect the Lord to other people. His light is manifest is many ways.

When we reflect Jesus, we look like…

the light of day and daylight: clear, honest, and free of hidden agendas. In a culture that often prefers ambiguity and half-truths, those who represent Jesus speak and live with integrity. Their yes is yes, and their no is no (Matthew 5:37). There is a transparency in us that does not need to manipulate or conceal. People sense they are dealing with someone who walks in the open, just as daylight leaves nothing in shadow.

the light of the heavenly luminaries: steady, reliable, and orienting. The sun, moon, and stars were given “for signs and seasons, and for days and years” (Genesis 1:14). Likewise, believers who reflect Jesus become points of reference, and provide direction. Our consistency over time helps others find direction. In seasons of confusion, our presence should say, “True north is still this way.”

the dawn and morning light: bringers of hope and new beginnings. Dawn does not shout; it simply arrives and changes everything. After a dark night, the dawn brings hope. Followers of Jesus who represent Him well carry that same quiet promise. Where there has been despair, we introduce the possibility of a new day. Our lives testify that darkness does not have the final word because the Light of the world has already risen.

lightning: sudden, illuminating, and sometimes startling. There are moments when the Spirit of God breaks through with clarity that cuts through confusion. A word spoken in season, a decision made in obedience, an act of courage that others did not expect, these can flash across a situation and reveal what was previously hidden. The light of Yeshua Hamaschiach (Jesus Christ) is not always gentle; sometimes it is piercing!

…  the light of a lamp: practical, local, and useful in the dark places of ordinary life. A lamp does not light the whole city, yet it makes a room livable. We Christians who represent Jesus bring the light of His presence into homes, workplaces, schools, and communities. We do not wait for a platform; we simply need to shine where we are placed.

the light of life: vibrant, life-giving, and free from the stagnation of sin and death. Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). When His life flows through us, people notice a vitality that cannot be manufactured. There is joy that does not depend on circumstances, peace that passes understanding, and a resilience that points beyond human strength.

the light of prosperity: not necessarily material wealth, but the flourishing that comes from walking in God’s ways. Psalm 1 describes the person who delights in the law of the Lord as a tree planted by rivers of water, yielding fruit in season. We who reflect Jesus often become conduits of blessing. Our presence should build up rather than tear down, restore rather than diminish.

the light of instruction: teachers by both word and example. The light (ohr) includes the light that guides and trains. We believers who represent Christ do not merely hold correct doctrine; we embody it in ways that others can learn from. Our lives become living epistles, known and read by all men (2 Corinthians 3:2-3).

the light of the face: countenances marked by the favour and joy of God. Scripture speaks of the Lord making His face shine upon His people (Numbers 6:25). When we spend time with Jesus, something of that shine remains. There is a warmth, a kindness, a welcome in the eyes and expressions of those who have been with Him. We can even be like Moshe (Hebrew: מֹשֶׁה Moses) when he so greatly reflected God’s presence — the people could not stand the ohr. Exodus 34:29-35.

Application

All of this is possible only because Jesus is the light of the Ekklesia (Church). We do not invent these qualities; we receive them by remaining in Him. “Abide in Me, and I in you,” Jesus said. “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me” (John 15:4). The more closely we walk with Him, the more clearly His ohr light is seen in us.

The world does not need more religious performance. It needs the light of Christ shining through ordinary people who have learned to represent Him. When that happens, the darkness is pushed back: not by our strength, but by the presence of the One who is Light Himself. And the result is exactly what Jesus promised: people see the good works and glorify the Father in heaven.

So let us keep our faces turned toward Him. Let us refuse to hide the lamp under a basket. And let the full range of ohr, every facet of divine light, find expression in our lives that simply and faithfully represent Jesus.

Shine your light, stand for Life.
