Day 21: Pray for the Harvest

21 May 2021

2.9 MINS

Intention
God calls us to birth the harvest with prayer.

Scripture

“Then He said to them, ‘The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.’”Luke 10:2

Reflection
Have you ever had a kingdom challenge when you have reached a point of despair, crying out to the Lord, ‘If you don’t come we are in trouble’?

A few years ago, international evangelist Suzette Hattingh from Voice In the City contacted our ministry, following a strong conviction that the Lord wanted her to hold a series of evangelistic meetings in our city of Adelaide. It seemed appropriate to us that we should connect her with local evangelists, but she insisted that as a prayer ministry we ministered with her.

We planned that on her arrival, Suzette would train teams in preparation for daily outreach across the city and suburbs. We booked a city church for two evening meetings and met with pastors from local churches who were keen to participate.

Then two months before Suzette arrived, the Lord gave us an instruction that shocked us: book a stadium for the third night! For days we struggled, knowing that lack of funds and appropriate personnel would make it prohibitive. Suzette, however, was full of faith.

All stadiums in our city were unavailable — but the last one we approached accepted our request, and for a much lower fee.

As the days drew nearer, the spiritual battle intensified. None of the local media would allow us paid publicity. A radio station suddenly cancelled a planned interview with Suzette. Over a thousand leaflets were lost by a distribution centre. Sensing failure, nearly all the local churches withdrew. Even our computers crashed!

We had one mighty weapon left – praying to the Lord of the harvest!

The time of the outreach arrived. The anointing built over the three days of sharing the gospel in our city. On the final night, 2,000 turned up at the stadium — and after Suzette preached, hundreds of people ran forward in response to her powerful message. The offering was $30,000 above our needs. We sowed it back into the harvest field in other nations.

All over the world, the Lord of the harvest is raising up prayer. The Lamb that was slain will receive the reward of His suffering!

Prayer
Father, we repent where we have relied on our own strength to win souls for your Kingdom. You are Lord over the harvest, and we ask that You guide us in our prayer to see the labourers go forth. Forgive us when we have been intimidated or lacked faith in fulfilling your instructions. Grant us boldness to go forth in the power of Your Holy Spirit, sharing the love of Christ wherever You lead us, and seeing the glorious exchange made at the Cross break through into the lives of those who live in darkness. Come, Lord Jesus. Come, Lord of the harvest!
