BILL NOW KILLED: Adem Somyurek to Vote Against Andrews’ Permanent Pandemic Law
Ex-Labor MP Adem Somyurek has sensationally vowed to vote against his former party to squash the Andrews Government’s controversial pandemic bill. Without Somyurek’s support, Upper House votes on the legislation will be tied, meaning that it cannot pass into law.
On Wednesday, Somyurek notified the Victorian Parliament of his vaccine status after being suspended for refusing to provide it. This move was the strongest hint yet that Somyurek planned to scuttle the bill.
Then in a Herald Sun op-ed late in the day, Somyurek put his intentions in print. He said that the legislation gives “too much power to the government” and that it could lead to a “tyranny of rule by decree”.
“I will not support this bill in its current form,” he wrote, “and I would encourage the government to go back to the drawing board and consult more broadly.”
Not only is @AdemSomyurek voting against the 'Enabling Act' but he's written an op-ed in the Herald Sun explaining why.
Its an impressive outline of the Westminster system & concludes Dan was seeking an 'elective dictatorship'.
A national turning point.https://t.co/1BaxHbczDA

Mr Somyurek currently sits on the crossbench as an independent after being exposed for branch-stacking last year and being ousted from the Labor Party.
Somyurek’s decision to derail the pandemic bill has been widely viewed as an act of revenge against his former leader Dan Andrews and other ex-colleagues.
Earlier this week, Premier Dan Andrews watered down the bill after some 100,000 protesters took to Melbourne’s streets over the weekend to decry the legislation.
Good luck enforcing more restrictions once this bill passes.
I get the feeling Melbourne is done.

Unless another Upper House member decides to back down on their public commitment and support the pandemic bill at late notice, Andrews will be forced to redraw the legislation for another vote.
Victoria’s current state of emergency expires on December 15 and cannot be extended.
