Day 20: Worship is a Weapon

20 October 2022

3.3 MINS

Intention

To understand that our praise is a weapon in the mouths of believers

Scripture

“Let the high praises of God be in their throats and a two-edged sword in their hands.”
— Psalm 149:6 (ESV)

Reflection

Worship is a weapon in the believers’ mouths. God’s Word, spoken and sung, is our primary weapon as the sword of the Spirit. As prayer warriors, have we forgotten that the praises of God are a powerful weapon for tearing down strongholds and principalities and enforcing the victory of the cross?

This is explosively expressed in The Passion Translation:

“God’s high and holy praises fill their mouths, for their shouted praises are their weapons of war! These warring weapons will bring vengeance on the nations and every resistant power — to bind kings with chains and rulers with iron shackles. Praise-filled warriors will enforce the judgement decreed against their enemies. This is the honour He gives to all His godly lovers. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 149:6-9).

Doesn’t this remind you of the key of David in Isaiah 22:22?

And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.” (ESV)

Much more could be expounded here, but suffice it to say, David’s victory over Goliath did not begin in the valley of Elah. Victory began for David as he watched over his flock, playing his harp and singing to the Lord when no one was listening. We must not neglect worship.

Throughout history, revivals have been marked by prayer, repentance and singing. When asked if the Welsh revival of 1904 could spread to America, the reply was given, “Can they sing?” And of this same revival, Reverend W. T. Stead remarked, “Hitherto the revival has not strayed beyond the track of singing people. It has followed the line of song, not of preaching. It has sung its way from one end of South Wales to the other…”

It seems there is a SOUND that releases heaven on earth; just as there was a SOUND of the army’s shout before Jericho fell and the SOUND of Paul and Silas’ singing before the earth shook and their chains broke open. Now, more than ever, the prisoners are listening.

Sing to the Lord today! Whether a known song or a spontaneous melody, let thanksgiving and adoration pour from your lips. Remember the power of your song! The sung praises of our Lord are no longer just for the ‘talented’ or the ‘worship team’ in our communities. There is a new worship order, issued by heaven’s decree when the veil was torn, and the way made open. It’s time for us all to sing.

Let’s sing no matter what we may face, just like Paul and Silas. Whatever the newspapers may declare, SING! Australia needs the sons and daughters of the living God to raise our voices in unity, declaring the word of God over this nation. Your worship is a weapon.

It’s time to sing.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for the cross and the victory You have already won. There is nothing more powerful than the Name of Jesus! Thank You for Your Word in our mouths, living and active, with its creative power to destroy the enemy’s works and establish Your Kingdom. Forgive us for when we have fallen silent, dismayed by all the chaos we see in the world. We turn our eyes upon You, dear Jesus. We lift our voices to You afresh today. Lord, hear our praises rising in harmony across the land. We love You Lord; let us be a sweet, sweet sound in Your ear.

Amen.
