7.6 MINS

This is the central reality of Christianity.

There are of course millions if not billions of words written on the greatest event of human history: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus to try to offer just a few moving quotes out of so many to choose from may seem like the height of foolishness.

But one has to start somewhere, and I can also keep penning further articles on this topic featuring further quotes. So let me here offer a quite limited collection: 45 brief quotes by 33 authors.

Body of Christ

“All those who belong to Jesus Christ are fastened with Him to the cross.”
~ Augustine

“The cross is not the terrible end to an otherwise godfearing and happy life, but it meets us at the beginning of our communion with Christ.”
~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“If we want proof of God’s love for us, then we must look first at the Cross where God offered up His Son as a sacrifice for our sins. Calvary is the one objective, absolute, irrefutable proof of God’s love for us.”
~ Jerry Bridges

“The reconciliation of justice with mercy lies in the Cross. God does not balance mercy and justice; He accomplishes both to the full.”
~ J. Budziszewski

“God, hold us to that which drew us first, when the Cross was the attraction, and we wanted nothing else.”
~ Amy Carmichael

“Both God’s love and God’s wrath are ratcheted up in the move from the old covenant to the new, from the Old Testament to the New. These themes barrel along through redemptive history, unresolved, until they come to a resounding climax — at the cross. Do you wish to see God’s love? Look at the cross. Do you wish to see God’s wrath? Look at the cross.”
~ D. A. Carson

“All of heaven is interested in the cross of Christ, hell afraid of it, while men are the only ones to ignore its meaning.”
~ Oswald Chambers

“To be a follower of the Crucified means, sooner or later, a personal encounter with the cross. And the cross always entails loss. The great symbol of Christianity means sacrifice, and no one who calls himself a Christian can evade this stark fact.”
~ Elisabeth Elliot

“When you look at the Cross, what do you see? You see God’s awesome faithfulness. Nothing — not even the instinct to spare His own Son — will turn Him back from keeping His word.”
~ Sinclair Ferguson

Sublime Paradox

“The heart of the Christian Gospel with its incarnation and atonement is in the cross and the resurrection. Jesus was born to die.”
~ Billy Graham

“God undertook the most dramatic rescue operation in cosmic history. He determined to save the human race from self-destruction, and He sent His Son Jesus Christ to salvage and redeem them. The work of man’s redemption was accomplished at the cross.”
~ Billy Graham

“The cross of Jesus runs crosswise to all our human ways of thinking. A rediscovery of the hard and the unpopular themes of the Gospel will therefore be such a rediscovery of the whole Gospel that the result may lead to reformation and revival.”
~ Os Guinness

“Come, and see the victories of the cross. Christ’s wounds are your healings, His agonies your repose, His conflicts your conquests, His groans your songs, His pains your ease, His shame your glory, His death your life, His sufferings your salvation.”
~ Matthew Henry

“God turned our greatest evil (sin) into the occasion for our greatest good (salvation); in fact, He turned the greatest sin ever — deicide — into the very instrument of our greatest good, ‘Good Friday’.”
~ Peter Kreeft

“It costs God nothing, so far as we know, to create nice things: but to convert rebellious wills cost Him crucifixion.”
~ C. S. Lewis

“Look again at the cross, my friend. Take another survey. Examine it again with greater depth and profundity, and having seen the grace and the mercy and the compassion and the kindness of God, look again and this is what you will see. You will see the righteousness of God. You will see the justice of God and His holiness. It is the place of all places in the universe where these attributes of God can be seen most plainly.”
~ Martyn Lloyd-Jones

“If my preaching of this cross is not an offence to the natural man, I am misrepresenting it.”
~ Martyn Lloyd-Jones

True Love

“The great event on Calvary… is an eternal reminder to a power-drunk generation that love is the most durable power in the world, and that it is at bottom the heartbeat of the moral cosmos. Only through achieving this love can you expect to matriculate into the university of eternal life.”
~ Martin Luther

“Learn to know Christ and Him crucified. Learn to sing to Him, and say, ‘Lord Jesus, You are my righteousness, I am Your sin. You have taken upon Yourself what is mine and given me what is Yours. You have become what You were not so that I might become what I was not.’”
~ Martin Luther

“The cross… is the watershed event for the whole of the cosmos, affecting everything after it.”
~ J. Louis Martyn

“The cross is the victory, the resurrection is the triumph… The resurrection is the public display of the victory, the triumph of the crucified one.”
~ Leon Morris

“There is no death of sin without the death of Christ.”
~ John Owen

“The cross of Christ is a revelation of the love of God, for it reveals what that love is prepared to suffer for the one loved. I believe that the presentation of the death of Christ as substitution exhibits the love of the cross more richly, fully, gloriously and glowingly than does any other presentation. It gets nearer to the heart of that love than any of the other pictures that the New Testament contains.”
~ J. I. Packer

“The notion which the phrase ‘penal substitution’ expresses is that Jesus Christ our Lord, moved by a love that was determined to do everything necessary to save us, endured and exhausted the destructive divine judgment for which we were otherwise inescapably destined, and so won us forgiveness, adoption and glory.”
~ J. I. Packer

Divine Glory

“But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”
~ The Apostle Paul in Galatians 6:14

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
~ The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:18

“Life is wasted if we do not grasp the glory of the cross, cherish it for the treasure that it is, and cleave to it as the highest price of every pleasure and the deepest comfort in every pain. What was once foolishness to us — a crucified God — must become our wisdom and our power and our only boast in this world.”
~ John Piper

“Christianity is unique. The world’s religions have certain traits in common, but until the Gospel of Jesus Christ burst upon the Mediterranean world, no one in the history of human imagination had conceived of such a thing as the worship of a crucified man.”
~ Fleming Rutledge

“The cross, incomparably vindicated by the Resurrection, is the novum, the new factor in human experience, the definitive and world-changing act of God, that makes the New Testament proclamation unique in all the world.”
~ Fleming Rutledge

“I declare I know no greater proof of a person’s depravity than the fact that thousands of so-called Christians see nothing lovely in the cross. Well may our hearts be called stony, well may the eyes of our mind be called blind, well may our whole nature be called diseased, well may we all be called dead, when the cross of Christ is heard of, and yet neglected. Christ was crucified for sinners, and yet many Christians live as if He was never crucified at all!”
~ J. C. Ryle

“Miserable indeed is that religious teaching which calls itself Christian, and yet contains nothing of the cross.”
~ J. C. Ryle

“Take away the cross of Christ, and the Bible is a dark book.”
~  J. C. Ryle

“I am to face the cross of Christ in every part of life and with my whole man. The cross of Christ is to be a reality to me not only once for all at my conversion, but all through my life as a Christian. True spirituality does not stop at the negative (death), but without the negative — in comprehension and in practice — we are not ready to go on.”
~ Francis Schaeffer

“The most obscene symbol in human history is the Cross; yet in its ugliness it remains the most eloquent testimony to human dignity.”
~ R. C. Sproul

“Leave out the cross, and you have killed off the Gospel of Jesus. Atonement by the blood of Jesus is not an arm of Christian truth; it is the heart of it.”
~ Charles Spurgeon

“Jesus has borne the death penalty on our behalf. Behold the wonder! There He hangs upon the cross! This is the greatest sight you will ever see. Son of God and Son of Man, there He hangs, bearing pains unutterable, the just for the unjust, to bring us to God. Oh, the glory of that sight!”
~ Charles Spurgeon

“Let us go to Calvary to learn how we may be forgiven. And then let us linger there to learn how to forgive.”
~ Charles Spurgeon

The Cross of Christ - John Stott - book“The essential background to the cross, therefore, is a balanced understanding of the gravity of sin and the majesty of God. If we diminish either, we thereby diminish the cross.”
~ John Stott

Kingdom of God

“It would be hard to exaggerate the magnitude of the changes that have taken place as a result of the cross, both in God and in us, especially God’s dealings with us and in our relations with Him. Truly, when Christ died and was raised from death, a new day dawned, a new age began.”
~ John Stott

“Love. How did one show it? How could God Himself show truth and love at the same time in a world like this? By dying. The answer stood out for me sharper and chillier than it ever had before that night: the shape of a Cross etched on the history of the world.”
~ Corrie ten Boom

“The cross where Jesus died became also the cross where His apostle died. The loss, the rejection, the shame, belong both to Christ and to all who in very truth are His. the cross that saves them also slays them, and anything short of this is a pseudo-faith and not true faith at all.”
~ A. W. Tozer

“The man with a cross no longer controls his destiny; he lost control when he picked up his cross. That cross immediately became to him an all-absorbing interest, an overwhelming interference. No matter what he may desire to do, there is but one thing he can do; that is, move on toward the place of crucifixion.”
~ A. W. Tozer

“Jesus Christ went more willingly to the cross than we do to the throne of grace. Had not we need then provoke ourselves to duty?”
~ Thomas Watson

“To abandon all, to strip one’s self of all, in order to seek and follow Jesus Christ naked to Bethlehem where He was born, naked to the hall where He was scourged, and naked to Calvary where He died on the cross, is so great a mystery that neither the thing nor the knowledge of it, is given to any but through faith in the Son of God.”
~ John Wesley

“Jesus’ death was seen by Jesus Himself… as the ultimate means by which God’s kingdom was established. The crucifixion was the shocking answer to the prayer that God’s kingdom would come on earth as in heaven.”
~ N. T. Wright

When Jesus spoke of His word being living water He was telling me something so big I can’t even visualise it. So I visualise Him walking and talking with me and time it’s self stands still. And then I am no longer visualising – we really are together in conversation.
Thank you for another banquet Bill.
