We Need The Voice
We need The Voice! We all — regardless of our ethnic or cultural background — need The Voice.
The Voice has the message that we all need to hear. We all need to shape our lives around what The Voice tells us. The Voice speaks truth, essential life-changing truth. We must listen.
But not to that Voice! Not the so-called Voice to Parliament. Not the proto-apartheid race-based bureaucracy that would divide Australia by granting certain rights to people of a particular ethnic heritage. Not the proposed ‘advisory’ group that would give direction to the Parliament, and perhaps even to the Cabinet.
No, not that Voice… but this Voice!
The Voice That Reveals His Authority
The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
The God of glory thunders,
The Lord is over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful,
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
Yes, the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
~ Psalm 29:3-5
First and foremost, we all need to recognise the power and authority of the true God.
God is a God who communicates, Who chooses to reveal Himself to human beings both through the nature of what He has created and through the word that He has spoken. Some of His words are quiet and gentle, but some reveal His power as the Creator and Sustainer of the Earth.
When the Voice of the Lord speaks with that power, might and majesty are on display. Even the fiercest storm pales into insignificance. Even the largest and strongest trees are broken to pieces. God is mighty over the natural order, and mighty over us as human beings. The Voice speaks this truth.
Therefore we, as human beings, are not ‘masters of our own destiny’. We are not sovereign ‘kings’ and ‘queens’ in our own individual kingdoms. We are not ultimately independent.
The Voice declares that the Almighty God has authority over us.
The Voice That Reveals His Redeemer
On two occasions during the ministry of Jesus Christ, we are told that The Voice spoke out of Heaven.
Immediately following Jesus’ baptism, the Bible tells us that “a voice out of the heavens said, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’” (Matthew 3:17). God the Father was affirming the divine identity of the Redeemer. Jesus of Nazareth was not just a religious teacher, a miracle-worker, and a prophet. He was the “beloved Son”, “the Word” who “became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14), and the One who “has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).
And then, when Jesus was transfigured and His glory was revealed, “a voice out of the cloud said, ‘This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!’” (Matthew 17:5) God the Father was again affirming the identity of the One through whom redemption for a lost humanity would be accomplished.
The Voice points to Jesus Christ.
The Voice That Reveals His Eternity
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying,
‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men,
and He will dwell among them,
and they shall be His people,
and God Himself will be among them.”
~ Revelation 21:3
The Voice speaks of relationship between God and those who have responded to His offer of redemption through Jesus Christ. And this relationship is an eternal one.
The Voice is about reconciliation and hope for eternity.
Which Voice?
Which Voice will we listen to here in Australia?
Will we pay heed to The Voice that recognises the true Sovereign and His authority over us, points us to the Lord who redeems us, and assures us of an eternity in His presence?
Or will we listen to a Voice — or even a myriad of voices — filled merely with the wisdom of fallen human beings?

Amen and thank you Brian. Your voice is like soothing gentle rain on a hot Australian day.
