What Becomes of a Culture When Even the Pope Seems to Have Given Up Believing in God?
I watched on in despair last week as Pope Francis told an interfaith gathering in Singapore that the Christian faith was just one of many roads to God.
He said it doesn’t matter if you’re Sikh or Muslim or Hindu or Christian – it’s all the same thing, and it’s all good.
Why should this matter?
Some saw it as a wonderful admission that we are all right, in our own way.
Others saw it as a humble confession that none of us can claim to be right.
But most – and I suspect the Pontiff himself – saw it as a way of being inclusive.
Ah yes, inclusiveness. It’s now the number one priority in our culture.
But to be inclusive, you have to include people around something. Our culture, having given up on truth, is trying to include people around inclusion.
Having given up on shared values, we’re trying to create social cohesion around a shared desire for social cohesion. It’s a fool’s errand because none of it makes sense.
In order to be inclusive, the Pope told those assembled that no-one should say their religion was more important or truer than anyone else’s.
If you have to deny truth in order to be inclusive, then how valuable is that inclusion?
If inclusion is based on a denial of the truth, then aren’t you including people in a lie?
And if inclusion is only made possible by inviting everyone to close their eyes to reality, then aren’t you seeking to include everyone in a kind of insanity?
Dangerous Ground
The Western World is in crisis right now. Yes, inflation, housing, energy, security and the cost of living are enormous challenges.
But the greatest crisis we’re facing is one of reality, and of meaning.
In the Western World, we are now so confused that we dare not say for sure what a woman is.
We are now so befuddled that we boast there are dozens of genders, and new ones appear all the time.
We are a society that is producing guided missiles and misguided men. We can fire rockets to the stars, but cannot say for certain which way is up.
Heck, we can’t even look down – in the shower – and say for certain we know what any of it means.
Hollywood celebrities no longer talk about truth except as it relates to themselves.

The only truth they acknowledge is “my truth”, which may be the opposite of “your truth”. But as long as each man is true to himself, then we are satisfied – though what any of that means is absolutely anyone’s guess.
Politicians, taking their cues from culture as they have always done, have given up talking about truth and falsehoods.
Instead they speak of misinformation and disinformation – the ultimate in subjective terms – which they now seek to enshrine into law.
So we increasingly have laws that are entirely subjective because, having done away with objective truth, subjectivity is all we have left.
So if a man feels like he is a woman, then most of our State Governments will readily change his birth certificate to reflect his feelings – and who are you to argue?
Do people not realise the enormous danger in this?
Power Struggles
When everything – even the laws of the land – are subjective, then the only way to determine what is right is through might.
Having abandoned any truth beyond our own hearts – which, let’s face it, doesn’t always serve us well – there is no authority beyond ourselves to whom we can appeal.
And so, to ensure inclusion and social cohesion, the Government benevolently steps in.
State control tightens, and bureaucratic tribunals are given the power to rule on everything we say and even on what we think.
There are unserious politicians in the United Kingdom who now seriously believe that the State should be able to prosecute citizens for praying in their mind – if the person’s private thoughts to God violate the State’s ideals.
To summarise, in professing to be wise, we have become fools.
We are the sailor who, having given up on trying to navigate by the stars because he felt it too arbitrary, decided to tie his lamp to his ship’s mast and navigate by that.
It is, of course, only a matter of time before he will crash into rocks and even then, he will be completely clueless as to why he ran aground. No doubt, lawyers will find someone he can sue. And the compensation payout will enable him to buy a bigger boat so that he can do it all over again, and again, and again.
The only hope for our sailor, who of course is metaphor for Western culture – which is another way of saying you and I – is that he once again places his trust in the heavens.
But how can men rediscover reality when even the Pope seems to have given up on believing in God?

If you’re a parent or a grandparent, you probably worry about what your child or grandchild is learning at school. In the first of its kind in Australia, a survey has been launched to measure parent attitudes to Respectful Relationship sessions in schools.

Thank you James for being so clear about what our culture strives so hard to obscure.
The Bible never commands us to trust completely in anyone else’s “truth”, not even the Pope’s. Even his “truth” must be compared to the indestructible plumb-line of Holy Scripture.
The Bible clearly, repeatedly commands us to trust in God; to study the Scriptures; to test all things and cling to what God says is right, even if our faith leaders disagree with Scripture.
So we who claim to be searching for God have some serious homework to do for ourselves, to come to know God’s Word.
Yes, we are called to LOVE the church, and the Pope, and all people, and to pray for them … but it is the LIVING GOD WHOM WE ARE TO TRUST.
So, our question is, WHO IS the God for whom we are (supposedly) all searching, and long to be “included” with ?
God’s Word shows that all people are invited to be included – but ONLY if we come the exclusive way that He has provided : Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour of sinners.
There is always room at the foot of The Cross for one more sinner who will come to Him in humble faith.
There is NO other way.
Christ ALONE is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.
Even for the Pope.
I am a loyal, traditional Catholic who has never taken any notice of anything this Pope has said. I have loathed him from the day he was elected. In my opinion his “vocation “was not for the right motive, but, motivated by ill-health and a running out of job options. The sooner he departs this life , the better , except he has stacked the College of Cardinals with like-minded subversives who will continue his evil work.
None of the other religions lead to the One, True God. One religion (which I am not supposed to mention / criticise ) is founded on coercion , cruelty and revenge, etc. It does not ban slavery, child marriage = paedophilia, etc. Another major religion worships animal deities. How absurd ! Native religions with their witchcraft and curses certainly do not lead people to God , but, to Satan ! An examination of the rest shows them all deficient. Only Christianity leads to God. This Pope has done emmense harm /confused the younger generations who in Catholic schools have been taught, instead of the Bible, 10 Commandments + Catechism , this Inclusiveness Woke rubbish . Sadly , poor little Pope Benedict 16th was too old and had to retire before he could reform the Church. Thanks James for a great article as usual .
When I heard the report that the Pope thought Christianity was only one of many ways that lead to God I felt like sending him a bible with a bookmark at John 14:6 highlighted and underlined. Do you think he would read it?
Let’s pray that the veil that is preventing him seeing God would be removed and that the veil blinding all who follow his beliefs would also be removed.
Yes. Many RCs were dismayed by this. He seems locked into a distorted theology with a doubtful relationship with Christ. As a denominational and world leader it is extremely worrying.
Thanks for the candidness and the humour. Otherwise the rest of us are likely to loose our sanity at the swirl of lies parading as truth.
As the Bible says even the elect will be deceived. Look no further!!!!! Well written
The Pope makes a suitable candidate for the False prophet during the Tribulation.
So sad.
We do not publish artilces crtical of leading Christian figures easily. Our passion is unity and love.
I had very high hopes with Pope Francis. I have studied him a lot early on and bought his book about the Joy of The Gospel which is magnificent.
Yet I have a horrible feeling that he has some bad ideas. The Marxist liberation theology got a lot of traction in South America amongst the Jesuits sadly of which he is one.
But I also have a horrible feeling that his press staff and the mainstream media are making and twisting his bad ideas and making them worse.
The team at the Canberra Declaration try to avoid criticising Church leaders and Church denominations unnecessarily. Lest we become like Satan who is the ”Accuser of the brethren.” Revelation 12:10.
The Canberra Declaration has championed unity and love more than anybody or certainly more than most. My grandmother used to say to me when I was a wee boy in Scotland. “If you cannot say anything good don’t say anything at all.”
In spite of all this we decided we needed to bring these comments into the light. James can be pretty point blank but he has been relatively kind in this article.
