A little-known part of the Christmas story is the Judean King Herod’s grisly slaughter of Bethlehem’s babies in the hope he might kill the Christ child.

We find the story in Matthew chapter 2.

Informed by star-gazing Wise Men from the Far East that a new king had been born, Herod moved quickly to protect his career by seeking to snuff out the life of a perceived challenger.

His material comfort and position were under threat, babies must be killed.

The Bible, which records the joy and tragedy of the first Christmas, also tells us in its wisdom books that there is nothing new under the sun.

Fast forward two thousand years to two weeks before Christmas 2024 and the newly crowned king David Crisafulli of Queensland was considering how he could shore up his power.

Perceiving his biggest threat to be his majority pro-life party room, he felt compelled to prioritise the uninterrupted killing of babies to birth (and even after) for the next four years of his rule.

The Katter’s Australia Party Leader, Robbie Katter, had promised to introduce a bill into the Parliament to require medical assistance to be rendered to babies born alive after surviving their abortion, something that occurs at about the rate of one per week in Australia.

Because these inconvenient survivors would open a debate about the human rights of unborn babies and the laws in Queensland which allow them to be killed right up to the moment of birth, threatening our sexually “liberated” society’s love of abortion as a backup contraceptive, Crisafulli felt he needed to act.

He and his leadership team secretly cooked up a scheme to impose an unprecedented gag upon the seat of Queensland democracy by imposing a motion which prohibits discussion of abortion.

Sadly, every LNP MP, including a number who have spoken for the pro-life cause in churches, fundraisers and rallies, voted for the gag.

Matthew was a tax collector on behalf of the occupying Romans who became a disciple of the child who survived the massacre, Jesus.

He quoted the prediction by the Jewish prophet Jeremiah some 700 years beforehand of the baby slaughter:

“A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

In August, a modern-day Rachel went before a Queensland Parliamentary committee and testified of the slaughter of babies in Queensland hospitals.

Louise Adsett, like Rachel weeping for her children, wept for the babies born alive after abortion in her hospital and were left to die.

As we consider the injustice of this and the injustice of the Crisafulli gag motion, we should meditate on why powerful people find their careers threatened by children to the point where they decree their killing.

Please pray with me for an end to abortion. Please act politically for an end to abortion.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are a God of Justice and Mercy. We thank you for the sacrifice, Jesus you gave for all sin for all time. Lord, we bring before you now and the horror of the gagging of the politicians in Queensland and those in South Australia. Our government is meant to represent the people, we need there to be opportunity to bring forth bills or even discussion on issues that directly affect human life of our most vulnerable unborn Australians. Lord, we ask that you expose the work of the enemy with unholy alliances and secrets that need to come forth. Thank you for your way Lord, your timing, we ask for you to dethrone those who are in powerful positions in our nation who appear to have little concern for life of every Australian. We agree as one that this be thwarted, and the ban removed. Lord, you fight for us and vengeance is yours. Lord, we forbid the politicians from silencing those who speak for those being led to slaughter of abortion or those left to die after a failed abortion. Lord their blood is crying out and we ask for the resolve of every appointed leader in this nation to be that of upholding your command “Thou shalt not kill”. We look to you to shift this evil out of our parliament in Jesus Powerful Name. Amen

Prayer Points

• A spirit of repentance to flood our government and a humility to seek God’s face.
• All bans or coercion be exposed and remedied.
• Righteousness to rule.
• Pray that the Spirit of Truth goes forth to persuade and convince people that abortion is unthinkable in Australia.
• That Jesus’s body be in unity as one (John 17:21) and be in prayer and advocate for Life for the Unborn. That Jesus’s disciples be activated in their unique spheres of influence speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.
• Pray that in all the upcoming elections that Australians will vote according to Life. That State and Federal political leaders who have stopped their parties from bringing forth any discussion or bills about abortion, repent and that this ban be lifted. That the Babies Born Alive (Human Rights — Children Born Alive Protection Bill 2021) tabled in the Australian Federal Parliament to be passed with no more delay, so that in every state and territory in Australia where babies have been born alive after a failed abortion, that they will receive proper medical care and legal protection.
• That every church be a trusted place of mercy and compassion — to discern and discover those who find themselves in an unplanned/crisis pregnancy. To be an effective House of Refuge for the unborn and their families. For Hubs of Love to be established in every city and town in the nation.
• That women in crisis phone the compassionate and confidential Pregnancy Help Australia or visit a life-affirming pregnancy centre — not go to a pro-abortion doctor or clinic for advice.
• We pray for every state and territory of Australia to arise in the cause of defending life in the womb from the tragedy of abortion and come together to walk for life. A blessing on the “Walk for Life Adelaide” on 8 February 2025 and “March for Life” Brisbane — date TBA, Mackay “March for the Babies” in October, “March for the Babies” Melbourne, Perth’s Rally for Life in May, and for all Territories and States to join in and hold a Walk for Life in their city/region.
• Pray for Love Adelaide’s Walk for Life 2025 on 8^th February from 10am-12pm to grow in momentum and fruitfulness. Pray for effective doors of favour to open, health and strength for the leaders, speakers and volunteers, for finances, safety and perfect weather.
