Intention

To encourage the saints to strive to strive side by side for the faith of the gospel so that Australia can be re-evangelised by 2033.

Scripture

“If there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Reflection

The Reaching Australia 2033 vision is a call to take the good news of Jesus to every Australian by Pentecost 2033. This is quite the task, and impossible by human effort alone. Yet, it is not without precedent.

It has been documented that “by the end of the nineteenth century the Australian people were thoroughly evangelised”. This was “through a multiplicity of denominational and non-denominational, national and international evangelical agencies.”[1]

How can this happen again? How can we ‘thoroughly evangelise’ Australia once more? If we are going to be single-minded and work together, then we must start with humility and servant-heartedness.

In Australia today there appears to be a growing hunger for spiritual things. I heard the recent story of one young man who knocked on the door of a Baptist church building in Canberra seeking spiritual help. Another walked into an evening service at the same church looking for answers.

A friend of mine is now meeting with them separately and reading and discussing the Gospel of John with them. Here we have a man humbly, patiently, and with care working with these men and pointing them to Christ.

People need to hear the gospel, and some are already ready to believe in Christ. How about you? Are you willing to be a labourer, to be available, to work together, to go and live among the lost?

Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians from prison to encourage the Christians at Philippi in their growth and partnership in the “defence and confirmation of the gospel” (Philippians 1:7).

His letter speaks of the importance of unity in community and godly living, urging the Philippian believers to “be blameless and innocent children of God”, shining “… as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life…” (Philippians 2:14–15).

Paul exhorts them to humility and servant-heartedness, having a manner of life “… worthy of the gospel of Christ”, and “with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel” (Philippians 1:27).

These instructions confront us and cause us to consider: What would this mean for me? How can we strive side by side to advance the gospel of Jesus and his kingdom into the nations? How can we be prayerful labourers, working together “in full accord and of one mind” (Philippians 2:3)?

May the Lord raise up his Church, imitating his character, that “counts others more significant” than ourselves and brings the gospel to the nation.

Lord, may our love for one another “abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that we may approve what is excellent” (Philippians 1:9).

May we work together “in full accord and of one mind” intentionally going to the lost, serving “side by side for the faith of the gospel”, as an enduring movement to successive generations.

For your glory, amen!
