Australia Left Flat-Footed As New Zealand Bans Puberty Blockers
New Zealand’s decision to halt new prescriptions of puberty blockers highlights a growing global reassessment that’s leaving Australia on the back foot.
New Zealand has just joined Team Sanity, becoming the latest nation to ban the use of so-called puberty blockers for young people suffering gender dysphoria.
The announcement came Wednesday, when NZ Health Minister Simeon Brown cited the UK’s landmark Cass review as the impetus for the ban, which will begin on December 19.
In his announcement, Mr Brown described the move as a “more consistent and carefully monitored approach,” and one that reflects similar moves in the UK, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
The ban will not apply to existing patients, nor to the drugs’ use in treating endometriosis, prostate cancer and other conditions “where there is strong clinical evidence of benefit”.
It only applies to new prescriptions of “gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues for the treatment of gender dysphoria or incongruence,” according to the official press release.
“The Ministry of Health’s evidence brief found that there is a lack of high-quality evidence” for the treatment, the statement explained, adding that the ban will stay in effect until the UK completes its clinical trial on the matter.
Puberty Blockers in Australia
New Zealand’s decision serves as an embarrassing reminder of Australia’s sluggish response to the puberty blocker scandal. As NZ Associate Health Minister Casey Costello remarked following the news:
We’ve seen the evidence. Puberty blockers cause irreversible harm to bone density, fertility, brain development, and future sexual function. Yet bureaucrats defend them, bowing to activist pressure instead of listening to common sense.
Only after a taxpayer-funded Cairns clinic allegedly prescribed the drugs to 42 underage patients without their parents’ consent — and Queensland subsequently imposed a statewide ban on the practice — did the Albanese government dare countenance the issue.
Even then, Health Minister Mark Butler only went so far as announcing a review of the treatment, ignoring more serious calls from over 100 prominent Australians to pause the practice immediately.
The Albanese government’s review is due for release in mid 2026 — a delay that will expose hundreds more Australian youth to the dangerous treatment pathway despite what we already know.
And yes, we know what Mark Butler will tell us in seven months’ time — because it will mirror exactly what the NZ government announced this week, what the Cass review revealed in April of last year, what the WPATH scandal exposed, and what governments all around the world have been saying for years on end:
There’s insufficient evidence regarding the benefits, risks and long-term outcomes of puberty blockers for gender dysphoria.
We’re adopting a precautionary, safety-focused approach with stronger clinical safeguards.
We’re aligning our policies with international reforms to ensure decisions follow the best available evidence.
It’s all so sadly predictable.
Follow the Science?
Ms Costello is right: bureaucrats — on both sides of the ditch — have defended the use of puberty blockers because they are beholden to radical activists.
The party that endlessly bloviates about “following the science” is refusing to follow the science. The side of politics that styles itself as “progressive” is resisting progress on this issue at all costs.
By mid next year, the Albanese government will no doubt assure us how sensible they are in their restraint for finally imposing a ban. They’ll probably deride the opposition for lacking the same prudence.
Meanwhile, you read it here first: puberty blockers — and the entire “gender-affirming care” schtick — is quack science. It belongs in the same category as bloodletting and lobotomies. And it will be to Australia’s everlasting shame — and the detriment of countless young people — that we ever fell for the snake oil in the first place.

every time the church gets involved in health millions die
your churches bear testament to how badly you handled covid, look how many americans went like lambs to the slaughter for tithes
you fed each other cattle wormer and you equated science with withcraft and communism
it killed off hundreds of thousands of your elders and its likely the churches didnt recover
you did this to yourselves and im glad we had a strong government to protect us from conservative recklessness
youd likely be like your american brethren if we had let you do what you intended
I’m sorry Andy, but could you answer a few questions for me? How was the church involved in killing people? My understanding of history is that Christians were the builders of our first churches and the government took over responsibility of them.
What part did the church have to play in handling covid, when covid was made in a lab in China and spread throughout the world by “people carriers”?
Many countries used ivermectin -a drug devised by a Japanese scientist and used for many years by both humans and animals pre covid.
Throughout covid, Ivermectin and other “simple” remedies were used by many countries and people to prevent and treat covid and continue to form positive outcomes for many people. Yes, many people died because of Covid, but these were people whose health was compromised by taken a dangerous, unproven drug made by Pfizer and AstraZeneca. No one was “forced” to take Ivermectin, rather many governments forced people to be injected with another drug and had severe reactions as a result.
Andy, don’t blame the church. In fact don’t even waste time blaming the governments. Governments who take control of the people are not good governments. I see the best government of all as that governed by our Savior Jesus Christ who cares for us all, loves us and wants the best for us without fear or favour. Speak to Him. Christine
my other example is the response to aids
I was introduced to christ and the church in 1982, right at the time it was showing its heart by the most mean spirited vindictive furious tantrum Ive seen in 50 years, easily eclipsing the current gender panic in terms of nastyness and glee at the suffering of others
to see a roomful of people high on the miserable death of others, hands in the air giving thanks
and then the politicians and the grifters got to work
so yes it made an impression, just like university a year later where I met lots of gay and educated people who restored my faith in humanity after it had been so denigrated by the church
bob hawke came in 1983 and lifted all boats, mine for sure
I ended up nursing for 30 years, very comfortable in my relation with christ who informs great swathes of my life
my point being, the church politicised aids and millions suffered and continue to suffer needlessly because of calloused hardened hearts
the lukewarm quip always stuck
the churches response to aids was that
I firmly believe the modern church looks chewed up and spat out
I don’t bother to refute any of what you write, Andy. In my opinion , it’s all hateful rant not worth responding to !
Surely people should be protected from all the results of Puberty blockers as quoted by NZ Associate Health Minister Casey Costello above.
She says, “we’ve SEEN the evidence. Puberty blockers cause irreversible harm to bone density, fertility, brain development, and future sexual function. Yet bureaucrats defend them, bowing to activist pressure instead of listening to COMMON SENSE.”
this is the home of hateful ranting countess
the rest of australia is not like this
its a reasonable, educated, tolerant society
i really did have an unpleasnt experience watching an entire roomful of a of g christian rejoice in the death and suffering of aids victims
I ve never been able to unsee it countess
Australian Politics is the disgrace of the world. Dumb, full of dead men’s bones I have heard before. NOT far wrong. God help us.
