Why Competency Never Trumps (Pun Intended) Character
Donald Trump recently published a picture on Truth Social—which has since been deleted—in which he is clearly presented as someone like Jesus Christ. It’s impossible not to view this as being anything but blasphemy, and hence it’s only right that he has since deleted it.

Some Christians, such as Mike Foster from Answers in Genesis, have argued on social media that the picture is a political parody of the current ‘Woke Pope’, who is an outspoken critic of the Trump administration. However, Donald Trump himself has said he was presenting himself as a ‘doctor’ and that to consider him as any kind of religious figure is an example of ‘fake news’.
I’ll leave it for you to decide, but I’ve never seen any kind of medical professional pictured like that! I mean, why is he wearing a red religious shawl—much like the Pope routinely wears—rather than a stethoscope?
What’s more, who’s the sick person he’s supposed to be healing? I’m not into conspiracy theories, but as some people have pointed out, he looks an awful lot like Jeffrey Epstein. And don’t get me started on the weird, angelic figures coming down from the sky behind him…
While far from being the greatest President ever—regardless of what he might claim—Donald Trump has done many things which I think we can be grateful to God for. For example, pushing back against D.E.I, boosting the economy and securing the border. But that doesn’t mean his political competency should provide cover for his lack of many glaring character flaws.
The ‘Greatest Sin’
Trump often glories in his list of achievements in a way which would make even the greatest world leaders in history blush with embarrassment. Trump’s greatest flaw is his hubris or pride, and this is also the most serious. C. S. Lewis argues in chapter 8 of Mere Christianity, pride is the ‘great sin’. As Lewis explains:
I now come to that part of Christian morals where they differ most sharply from all other morals. There is one vice of which no man in the world is free; which everyone in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else’s and of which hardly any people, except Christians, ever imagine that they are guilty themselves. I have heard people admit that they are bad-tempered, or that they cannot keep their heads about girls or drink, or even that they are cowards. I do not think I have ever heard anyone who was not a Christian accuse himself of this vice. And at the same time, I have very seldom met anyone who was not a Christian, who showed the slightest mercy to it in others. There is no fault which makes a man more unpopular, and no fault which we are more unconscious of in ourselves. And the more we have it ourselves, the more we dislike it in others.
The vice I am talking of is Pride or Self-Conceit: and the virtue opposite to it, in Christian morals, is called Humility. You may remember, when I was talking about sexual morality, I warned you that the centre of Christian morals did not lie there. Well, now, we have come to the centre. According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.
Other political leaders might have all kinds of significant shortcomings, but the sin of pride is the most disastrous of all. Why? Because, like a moral cancer, it infects everything else it touches.
By the way, it’s also why the Biblical qualification for a man who would seek to be an overseer or ‘elder’ in God’s church involves his character (See 1 Timothy 3; Titus 1). The only competency Scripture says is that he must be “apt to teach” (1 Tim. 3:2; 2 Tim. 2:24).
Eat Grass!
Daniel chapter 4 is particularly apposite right now to all of this. There, we read of Nebuchadnezzar, the pagan King of Babylon, who is completely puffed up with pride. King Nebuchadnezzar is given a dream which prophetically announces his own downfall and future restoration. What’s more, central to the dream’s message is this truth:
The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men. (Daniel 4:17)
As most people know, despite the dream’s warning—and explicit explanation—its content is fulfilled. Nebuchadnezzar is divinely humbled and in the midst of him glorying in his great power and wealth, while the “words were still on his lips”, see Daniel 4:31. In short, Nebuchadnezzar loses his mind and for “seven times” Nebuchadnezzar is reduced to eating grass like a dumb beast until he will “acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes.” (Daniel. 4:32)
I sincerely pray that Donald Trump comes to a real and saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. I’m praying that in His infinite mercy and divine sovereignty, the Greatest King of all Kings might humble this small, but extremely proud, king to humbly confess His Name.
The LORD did it for Queen Elizabeth, who confessed Christ Jesus as her Saviour, and I’m hoping that He will do it not just for her son King Charles, but also for the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Australia as well. Till they all bend the knee and acknowledge that Jesus alone is Lord! As we read in Philippians 2:5-11:
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
Did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
But made Himself nothing,
Taking the very nature of a servant,
Being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
He humbled Himself
And became obedient to death – even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place
And gave Him the name that is above every name,
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
In heaven and on earth and under the earth,
And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD,
To the glory of God the Father.

We were very disappointed at this meme. Yes, he should be far above this ridiculous AI artwork.
At the very best, Trump is a baby Christian. Being discipled by a few good Godly people, and a cast of suspect people like Paula White, gliding around the Oval Office looking like a blonde immitation of Katherine Kuhlmann.
Is he being told he’s God’s chosen vessel and Christ like in redeeming the USA from evil influence? Yep.
A lot of Thus Saith the Lord being spoken over him, and even if some is accurate, the filter he’s using to process it all isn’t that of a mature student of the Lord and His ways.
Our son sent the meme to us, and I discussed it with him. He, too is a baby Christian, though saved as a youngster.
I read some commentary from another voice yesterday. And I thought, Yes, so true.
The person said that they were shocked at the outrage by Christians , calling the post blasphemous, YET these same people, and church leaders are dead silent on issues like Abortion, Euthanasia, Same sex marriage, and Gender twisting.
Selective outrage and self righteousness remains the M.O. of the Pharisees.
So am I disappointed in the Pres? Absolutely.
But he’s also the only one moving on abortion issues and defunding Planned Parenthood. Standing for the abolition of gender surgery for minors. Stopping the flood of immigrants from bad places. You don’t see him sitting on the carpet with his shoes off at a mosque, in a subservient position with an Imam standing above him.
He’s stopped men in women’s sports.
His administration is searching for some 300 thousand children MISSING in America, living and dying in horror.
As for the Jeffrey Epstein dig, come on mate.
That’s pathetic.
So, he’s a bag of mixed lollies.
Others are as dumb as a bag of hammers.
And if we want to stand for God, let’s be shouting from the rooftops as the church about EVERYTHING!
Isn’t it strange how people can look at the same image and see things very differently? I believe Trump was a little foolish in posting his meme. However, that’s as important as it is to me. There is a huge difference between pride and self-conceit. I am proud of some of the things I have achieved in my life-time and ashamed of some other things I have done.
Before the 2024 election in America, I spent two weeks contacting Americans in the East during my mornings and in the West during my afternoons, such that I could catch them at home in their evenings. America or the United States is without a doubt the leading nation in our world. I barely tolerated an incapable and crooked Joe Biden during his four years as President. I had little time and still have little time for Barack Obama who would never stand against abortion. He was also a bare-faced liar and cheat who ingratiated himself with Bill Gates, Ellen DeGeneres and others he believed he could use. Kamala Harris would have destroyed what is left of the West.
Not that the East is necessarily bad. When the Western and Eastern Christians split over Christian principles, the Eastern Church was correct in the major difference – the Western Church had no right to insist on ‘filioque.’ Jesus said, “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify of me, and you also will bear witness because you have been with me from the beginning.”
Donald Trump has been a God-send, and I mean exactly that. God anointed his right ear with blood, the age-old custom of the Israeli nation. Is Donald Trump perfect? Who is? Remember that the great King David committed two of the gravest sin with a week.
Facts matter: President Trump did not portray himself as ‘Jesus’ in a picture posted to his Truth Social account.
An intern reposted a picture from influencer Nick Adams whose original caption for the picture was that President Trump was a ‘healer of nations.’ Not ‘Jesus,’ but a ‘healer of nations.’ Should someone have caught it before it was posted? Yes, most definitely. But it wasn’t sacrilege and it was never intended to be. And when made aware of the problem, he deleted it.
Now explain why it was perfectly OK for leftists to have called Barack Obama “Black Jesus” and publish dozens of pictures and magazine covers of him with halos around his head. Explain that?
Or, muslims portraying Jesus as muslim?
Trump and his team are doing what no other president had the courage to do, to try to stop Evil — the IRGC which has murdered since December 2025 about 40, 000 Iranians, and many more in past years when the Iranian people protested that they wanted basic freedoms away from rule by the mullahs . Now Iran is going to execute a young , beautiful woman , Bita Hemmati. Trump has been courageous. As a Catholic I am fed up with Leftist popes, including Leo, who , is in my opinion , out of touch with reality .We have more murders of Christians than ever before , and , yet this pope tells us we should not wage war–tell that to the unarmed Christian victims in Nigeria, Egypt, etc who are crying out for help. Pope Leo should be defending them . Leo and Western nations should hang their heads in shame. it is precisely because of this lack of caring for other Christians, that the West is fast becoming Muslim.
Trump has done amazing things for God like no other President before him but he has lots of faults too. I also have lots of faults but please do not tell anyone!!!!!
Politics requires one to self-promote, is that pride? Will voters know who their representative is if their representative does not speak of all their achievements? What does one do to counteract fake news, if not by correcting the narrative by telling of their successes? Are we blasphemous in desiring to be Christlike? I’m so glad God sees our heart & its desires because much can be misconstrued. Let’s pray that Donald J Trump is praying for God’s Help in all his decision making. He is not like any president that has gone before him.
Leonie, Kym, Warwick, appreciate each comment so much. With humble pie in the middle of removing a principality of Persia like in Daniel 9 -10, then as Kym stated what was the truth?
BRillant insights as we continue to repent of our own sins daily and pray with others to be forgiven and all of us to come closer to Jesus daily.
Thank you Canberra declaration and all writers . In the end as USA is truly believing with our hearts rededicated to God, May 17 and July 4 to Almighty Yahweh, may Yahweh Yeshua HOLY SPIRIT be EXALTED,TOTALLY LOVED,MOVING,THANK YOU YAHWEH 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾

I agree with above comments. We need to be careful how we judge things. Not through prejudice or religious spirit. Look at the intent and the fruit.
Hi Mark, thanks for your article. As a Catholic charismatic and a good friend of a number of the Canberra declaration leaders, I’m a little bit saddened by your reference to Pope Leo as the woke pope. Following him closely and reading what he writes, he is far from this. He is Jesus centred, orthodox, a lover of the church and the wider body of Christ.
I have issues with Francis … This needs to be repudiated.
Singapore 2024, Pope Francis went further than any of his predecessors in recognising the value of non-Christian traditions. “All religions are paths to God,” Francis told a group of young people. “There is only one God, and religions are like languages, paths to reach God. Some Sikh, some Muslim, some Hindu, some Christian.”

In terms of Leo, seeming to bow to Islam is a deadly mistake for those oppressed by Islam.
“Islam is a religion of peace we can learn from” as stated by Leo XIV following a historic visit to the Great Mosque of Algiers in April 2026 – this alone disqualifies Leo from ANY Christian ministry.
Just sayin!
