Chinese-Owned HOYTS Accused of Being ‘Anti-Women’ After Blocking Award-Winning Documentary on the Killing of Baby Girls
After having previously screened the award-winning movie It’s a Girl at HOYTS Blacktown, the Chinese-owned movie corporation has now banned a rerun at the same theatre in April because the movie ‘does not align with HOYTS’ brand considerations.’
Academic Accuses Cinema Chain of Bowing to Chinese Ownership
Australia Life Professor of Law and outspoken anti-abortion campaigner, Dr Jo Howe, who is currently raising the profile of sex-selection abortions in Australia, claims HOYTS was bowing to its misogynistic Chinese owners’ disregard for the killing of baby girls in China, India and now Australia.
“In China and India, girls are strangled at birth, buried alive, aborted and abandoned simply because they are girls,” Professor Howe said.
“We will not let HOYTS dictate what we can see, when they have already screened it at another private viewing at the same venue in January this year, so we will rally on Tuesday, 21st April, outside Hoyts HQ in Sydney CBD at 12.30 pm to make our point clear.
“Every day in New South Wales, unborn children lose their lives right up to 40 weeks of pregnancy – many of them girls simply because the parents wanted a boy!” Dr Howe said.
“And right now it is legal.
“Most of the Australian parents aborting these girls are of Chinese and Indian descent – a pointer to why Chinese-owned HOYTS wants to shut down this tragedy.
“This ‘gendercide’ by Chinese and Indian Australians in Australia has been confirmed by a study from Edith Cowan University, which looked at 2.1 million births in Australia between 1994 and 2015.
“The natural ratio of boys to girls is 105 to 100 girls, but the Edith Cowan University’s study uncovered the fact that some Australians of Chinese descent are delivering 134 boys to 100 girls!
“HOYTS and their Chinese owners are determined to stop Australians discovering the truth by banning a rerun of It’s a Girl, which was planned in a private viewing at its Blacktown theatre on Tuesday, 21 April,” Dr Howe said.
“It was set to run, then we got the news it did not meet HOYTS’ brand standards. How can an award-winning documentary exposing violence to women and girls be inconsistent with the HOYTS brand?”
“More than 12,000 people have already signed our petition calling on HOYTS to reverse its decision.
“It is extremely disturbing that a documentary that criticises the Chinese government has been banned from being shown by a Chinese-owned company in Australia.”
A Global Crisis — 100 Million Girls Missing Worldwide
“The United Nations estimates as many as 100 million girls are missing in the world today because of “gendercide.”
“This dreadful war against girls is rooted in terrible traditions and sustained by dangerous government policies aimed at eliminating girls.
“Shot in India and China, It’s a Girl asks why girls are either killed after birth or while still in the womb,” Dr Howe said.
“Hoyts had no problem screening Terrifier 3 and Babygirl. Extreme violence, graphic sex, and explicit material, all fine. But a documentary about 100 million missing women and girls? That crossed the line.
“This is not about content. It is about control.”
Rally, Legislation and the Fight Ahead
Dr Howe will be leading a group of young women in a visual protest outside HOYTS HQ World Square, Level 50/680 George Street, Sydney, at 12.30 pm this Tuesday, 21 April.
She is campaigning to overturn the ban and to show Australians the documentary HOYTS has banned.
Dr Howe is working with John Ruddick, MLC to pass a ban on sex-selective abortions in NSW, following her successful campaign to pass a ban in South Australia.
“The sex selection abortion bill will go before the upper house on Wednesday, 3 June and will be preceded by a rally, led by Dr Howe, outside the NSW parliament the evening before.
“Aborting babies just because they are girls is a disgrace and both houses of the New South Wales Parliament stand condemned for allowing it to happen,” Dr Howe concluded.
